What are some good and bad characteristics of stucco. Also, how does it stack up to other materials in price. I am thinking of stucco as the primary covering for my new home about to be built.

Stucco on block is fine. Stucco over wood framing has to be applied with proper ventilation or it can cause major rot problems. If you are not certain that it will be installed correctly then you may want to re-think! The new cement board sidings will breath, are fire proof, and hold paint very well. Pre-drilling the nail holes will give a better finish job. It would be best to not caulk the running seams, just the butt joints. This allows the house to breath better. You may also want to use 15# felt under the siding versus house wrap.

Most homes in the south and mid to southern California are stucco so it's obviously very durable. As long as it is real stucco.. There is something called Dryvit (sp?) that is not stucco. It looks like it but mold and water can form behind it. We just moved into our new home and it is completely stucco. Yes there will be cleaning issues around the base but a couple of times a year depending on your soil type and color should do it. Must be careful with pressure washing as it can chip it. They told us a simple hose down will take care of it. We did an eggshell color with black shutters....pretty simple color to keep up. We love it.

my husband does heating and cooling and I have heard him say that they are harder to heat and cool but I guess it would really make a difference where you live. When I was a child my bedroom at home was made of cinder block and it seemed warm enough. As far as floor covering, you can have tile installed with heat strips under it and the walls would be warm enough.. I watched a show on tv once where they blew insulation down through the blocks. I would look for cracks in the blocks and be sure the roof is in good shape.

It is pricey. Also a ot of people will not buy homes that are stucco because mold can grow easily. I'm not sure of the advantages.
