My husband has just finished chemo for colon cancer. Not finished with post-chemo tests yet, so too early to say "all clear".

But on the journey, we've met plenty of people who have survived many years post-colon-cancer diagnosis.

The chances of survival vary according to the stage of the cancer when they find it. If it's found early (stage I, II) then it's relatively easy to treat (*just* surgery, maybe a light chemo schedule) and survival rates are very high.

In stage III, survival is still very possible. (Stage III means it has spread to one or more lymph node). Most colon cancer diagnoses are in this category....it often doesn't show symptoms during stages I/II so rarely picked up unless you have a screening test.

In stage IV, the chances are less good. It has spread outside the colon.

Only a doctor will knowledge of the full facts can give a proper assessment of the chances of survival. And the chances can improve as well as reduce. Hubby (stage III) started off at 20% chance of survival after surgery, then told it would be 50% chance if he did chemo, now reassessed at a 2/3rds chance of survival given the volume of chemo he did and the full assessment of the cancer type.

Don't give up hope.

My dad and he is now 79.

Colon cancer is usually slow growing and if caught early enough can be succesfully treated. That's why it is important to get a colonoscopy around the age of 50, or sooner if colon cancer runs in your family. The prep for it isn't very pleasant but it's well worth it and you usually only need to have it done every 5 years.

So far, I am a survivor...Also fought ruptured appendix, peritonitis, gall bladder involvement at the same time.(2006)
Had lung cancer left lung in 1986, lower lobe removed. While recuperating from colon surgery where 18" removed, had heart attack, survived, month later discovered lung cancer, right lung. Upper lobe removed. Now, I am doing fine. Just a little slow sometimes, but I should be...I'm 72 years old.

Yes.. My grandma was told she had colon cancer 18 years ago and was sent home to die. They told her she had a tumor that was 7" long intwined with tenicals all wrapped up in her colon. She refused to accept the Doctors report & prayed along with her church & family. She always said that God showed her "I am the Lord thy God that healeth thee". The next time she went to the hospital, the tumor & cancer was gone!!!! The Doctors couln't explain it.. It showed on one X-Ray, but not the next.. There was proof that it was there, because there was scar tissue where it had been. This was 18 years ago and she just passed away 2 months ago at the age of 97.

On the other hand, my mother was told she had Lukemia (cancer of the blood) just 9 months ago and was a perfect picture of health. It took her life in 9 months and she passed away yesterday. This does not mean anything, other than that God tells us it is appointed unto man, once to die. The important thing we need to know is where will we go when we pass away. I know my mother is with my Heavenly Father in Heaven, as she was a strong Christian who loved the Lord and trusted in him up until the moment she was placed on life support 4 weeks ago.

There are three people at my church that have survived colon cancer. The key word here is church, they are firm believer in the healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am a 14 year survivor of breast cancer, So, you can see I too believe very much in the power of prayer and healing.
