Virginia????

Question

Can anyone tell me things they know about Virginia? I am moving there and I am clueless about it.

I am moving around the virginia beach area. I still need to buy a house. So if you know of any good house listings tell me of them too.

As the above responders stated, where are you from and where are you going? Virginia is a big state and depending on where you live, things are different.

I live in the Richmond area and everything that I like is within reach: a good mix of urban, suburban, and rural within a 30 minute drive; and it is only two hours to the mountains, to the beach, and to DC.

The other two major urban areas are the northern Virginia area (Prince William County and points north) and the Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads/Norfolk area by the Chesapeake Bay/Atlantic Ocean. Again, they have everything that you would want to look for in an urban area. However, traffic in the NOVA area tends to be really bad.

Charlottesville is an interesting mix of urban and rural. With UVA there, they tend to get packed when there is a game, and dead when college is out.

There are two major amusement parks: Kings Dominion and Bush Gardens Williamsburg. Plenty of history, from the American Civil War all throughout, Williamsburg, Yorktown, etc.

Several major colleges: VCU, UVA, VUU, VSU, Va. Tech, William and Mary... Along with the accompanying night life/student life.

My fiance is from New Jersey. She complains about what is not here all the time, such as no delis like she is used to, the heat and humidity, the lack of snow and the fact that no one can drive in it. (There is snow, more so in the northern or western portions. However, being a warmer climate, snow melts when it hits the ground then refrezes into ice, making it more dangerous to drive in than in Yankee territories.)

Virginia is a little bit more laid back than other places. (With the exception of NOVA, but then again most everyone in NOVA is from out of state.) So, the state is what you are willing to make it.

You don't say where you are moving to in Virginia and the state is very diverse. Northern Virginia is quite different then the Piedmont area and the southern part of VA. There is a lot of history here and there are beautiful historical homes, gardens, and museums. I believe 5 Presidents were born here. The Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains are beautiful and worth a drive through. Williamsburg is a colonial village which has been restored. Norfolk has a big naval base and is close to Virginia Beach. As you can see Virginia has something to offer many people. If you want more information check with their Dept. of Tourism or look them up online. "Virginia is for Lovers".

I just moved here too. It's really different because I am from Florida... Anyways, people are really friendly, I live in the capital, so there are enough malls and very busy. But I been to Powatan (spell?) and it's very deserted. Not many things to do in certain areas

I just want to say I envy the four of you. I would love to move to Virgina too, but my wife and kids like it here in Northern Arizona.

what part of virginia you movin to? i live in western virginia. what do you want to know? majority of the people are friendly. northern va and richmond and east va (tidewater, hampton, newport news, ect..) are city folk. central va, shenandoah valley, roanoke, western virginia, southwest va are rednecks. humidity is pretty high.
