This is something to be careful with and to find a psychiatrist that is competent. General practitioners, really don't know although many of them don't know they don't know. People with Bipolar Disorder sometimes need an antidepressant in the depressed phase. If someone is getting close to a manic phase, an antidepressant may put them into the manic phase. Welllbutrin is probably the most likely to do this.
Be very careful with a diagnosis of Bipolar disorder. These days it is the most popular diagnosis and is very over used. Insurance will pay, so many people who are not get diagnosed as Bipolar.

Sometimes an antidepressant(especially Paxil) can cause the person to have a severe manic phase. Just make sure the dr is aware of this and as soon as this person begins to show signs of becoming manic, get her to the dr asap. Sometimes it is better to take lithum and an anti-anxiety medication as needed. I am not a dr but know a little bit about this.
I dealt with this issue in my life about 7 years ago, I was diagnosed bipolar and with an anxiety disorder. It was an extremely hard time of my life, a close family member died and I kind of had a meltdown. My dr prescribed Paxil and I went totally manic, I was couldn't sleep for about a week. Anyhoo, it turned out it was from the paxil. I took lithium after that and clonazapam as needed for anxiety and was fine. I then made many changes in my life and am now medication free and have never felt better.

Anyone who is bipolar and willing to take antidepressants w/o stabilizers is in denial, just plain stupid, or hypomanic and not making good decisions. ADs without stabilizers are like poison to many bipolars. At best, the do nothing. More typically, they will flip the person to mania or a mixed state (depressed and manic at the same time, also known as hell). It does NOT matter the reason they are taken!
On stabilizers, ADs can help some with depression. Others can't take them even then.
~bipolar, previously dx'd MDD and put thru hell on just antidepressants too long.

My boyfriend has bipolar disorder and his doctor explained to us that an antidepressant can throw him into a manic episode. But since he was so depressed since his last manic episode, he is now taking Wellbutrin 150 mg. for depression and Ativan 2 mg for anxiety. It's been 3 months and everything is okay so far.
I take Wellbutrin 300 mg for depression but his doctor said that's too high of a dose for him since he is Bipolar.
Hope that helps.

I'm bi-polar,ADHD, ODD, and something with depression just can't recall what it is. I was only diagnosed 4 years ago but I know a bunch bout this. lol. I'm on zoloft, and it works great with my bi-polar. It helps balance it all out. I'm on Depakote 750 mgs for the bi-polar as a mood stabilizer. Hope this helps.

I ask a question, what do doctors say? Do not ask the doctors in one office you need to ask different ones. Also check on side effects and the mixing of medications. Most of not take as gospel what writers here say, always check the answers.
