The 8 yr old should be in bed by eight p.m and the 12 year old should be in bed by nine p.m ... both with lights out in half an hour. On a non school night, you could leave them up for one hour extra only.
Youngsters grow, heal, and develop during sleep time. Lets put it another way.. I really wish I knew any one of " all the other mothers ", the ones that dont have strict bedtimes and allow their kids to go to bed when they want to..

I think that an 8 year old should be in bed between 7-8pm a 12 year old 8.30-9pm, I agree letting them stay up a little longer on a Friday and Saturday night should be ok, but during school holidays keep the routine the same as they will find it harder to get back into the routine when they go back to school.

My kids have a routine. they get a bath at 8pm and by 8:30-8:45 they are in bed whether they like it or not. Even if they aren't tired they are in their beds.
