I posted this elsewhere but it answers your question better, so here you are.
Sometimes I think the tree was partly symbolic- eating a fruit isn't a bad thing in itself, but Adam and Eve were (at that point) in perfect harmony with God, each other, themselves, and all creation. But God wanted them to choose that life, not just live it because that was their only option. He doesn't force anyone to do anything. So he gave them that choice by giving them the first rule- don't eat that fruit- and allowing them to follow it or not. It's not like staying away from one tree is a huge thing to ask; he could have told them not to eat anything for a week, or something, but he gave them a simple and easily-obeyed rule. He told them not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in a symbolic sense too. They had always known good, but they hadn't known it was good because they had never known evil. They wouldn't know evil until they made a bad choice; God knew this, and told them not to make a bad choice because he knew they would suffer if they did, but they did it anyway. Would they have done so if not for the snake? No one will ever know. But the devil had already fallen from heaven by that time, and was a free agent. He tempted Eve with the fruit; she chose to give in, as did Adam shortly thereafter. Then they knew evil, and therefore the difference between it and good. So because they chose to allow evil into their lives, they lost perfection. It wasn't all because of the snake's influence, because they had God's influence too, and chose to listen to the snake instead. Anyway- that's why we now have evil in the world and we don't get to live forever in paradise, right off the bat. We HAD that world, but we chose to lose it. (Rather, Adam and Eve did, but if they hadn't, someone eventually would have.)
So anyway, God didn't want to leave them stranded with the results of their bad choice, so he promised them a Savior and sent Jesus to us. He spent the intermediate time giving us explanations for why we should choose right over wrong (in the Bible), and foolproof guidelines for what right is (the Ten Commandments). And when Jesus came, he wrapped up those explanations. So now we have all we need to live out God's will for our lives and end up with him in heaven in the end, but like Adam and Eve, we have to choose whether we want to listen to God or not.
*added* Our sins are our fault. They determine the state of our souls, and where we will end up farther along. Suffering is just a fact of life in our imperfect world. Life isn't fair; often it hands you lemons, and that's just how it is. You don't earn suffering, it simply happens. God doesn't cause it, but he allows it because you can learn from it if you accept it.

Adam and Eve's sin was eating an apple, your sin and my sin are equally punishable. Eating the apple was rebellion towards God. The act of eating an apple, in and of itself is not sin. Dis-obeying God in anything He asks of us, "Is Sin"
Poverty and suffering come about by humanities own sinful pride, greed and rebelliousness. Whenever we dis-obey God certain consequences will result. This is why God commands us not to do certain things, He knows the pain and suffering sin brings into this world. All sin has consequences, dire consequences that affect others, not just the person who sins. God is merciful, He instructs us how to live so we can enjoy a peaceful and long, prosperous life, full of His blessings. When we go against what God teaches us, can we then say God is un-merciful?... I think not! Humanity is to blame for the pain and suffering we live in today, when we as a people or nation, ask God to go away and leave us alone, God graciously does so. However, when God does leave, He takes His Protection and Blessings with Him. Our schools in america are a good example of this. We kicked God out and now our students are shooting eachother, the teachers (male and female) are molesting the students, the education system is struggling financially and our students test scores are dropping among the worlds students. These things were not an issue before we kicked God and open prayer out of our schools. Today you cannot turn on the News without hearing about a school shooting or teacher molestation charge and most recently involving women. The same goes for people or nations who reject God, a spiritual void is created and we open the door to another type of spirit to come in and fill this void. Gods Protection and Blessings keep wickedness from over running our schools and our country. Without Him we are subject to the principalities of this world. The story of Adam and Eve is not a story about an apple, it is a teaching of Good vs. Evil and the consequences of choosing evil. If everyone on earth lived a Godly life, filled with the Spirit of God, there would be no war, no hate, no perversions, no sickness, no disease - etc. All of these calamities result from rebellion towards God in one way or another. God Bless You...Peace.

The answer is yes and no. On one hand, we suffer the consequences of Adam's disobedience and have inherited a sinful nature from him. We suffer for Adam’s sin by effect as well as nature. We are sinners and live in a sinful world as is pretty obvious. When we face God on the day of judgment, the Lord won’t say to us, "Adam sinned, so you are going to pay for it." We are responsible for our own sins, not the sins of others.
edit: In case of the mentally ill or challenged ... God is just, fair, and merciful. Since we know all that about God, it is hard to believe that He would sentence anyone to hell if they had no choice in the matter! Only a person who understands right and wrong (good and evil) understands sin, and therefore can sin.

There is poverty and suffering because Adam sinned against God and chose to do that. You however should not be punished as long as you become a Christian by repenting, baptizing and allows Jesus Christ in your life to become saved.

You are not being punished. GOD blessed you with life, but because of the transgression of the father we are forced to work harder than we would have. GOD knows everything that is going on and he is merciful but he also has a plan and we can't rush that plan nor can we slow it down. Some people in this world may suffer so that the goodness of someone close to them can shine through while others may continue to do good even though they are in the face of constant evil. We may not understand GOD and HIS plan but all that matters is he has a plan and we should respect HIM for making us a part of it.

Ever since the apple was eaten in the Garden of Eden, man has exercised his free will. Poverty and suffering are the result of mankind's poor choices. God is merciful because He gives us knowledge to make the right choices. Man is still rebellious enough to make the wrong ones.
Adam was made in God's image.
Seth was made in Adam's fallen image.

No. You should be flogged in the public square for saying it was an apple. It does not say. If you get such a small, minor detail as that wrong, ask yourself "What else have I been wrong about concerning the Bible as God's Word?"
Should be easy. You atheists preach so much about "open-mindedness", yes? Test your objectivity.

You are not accountable for the sins of Adam. You are held accountable for YOUR OWN sins. Lest you dare blaspheme further and deny that you are a natural born sinner. Repent while there is still sand in the hourglass!

You have a point.
Should all Christians in 2007 be punished and attacked because of what Christians did during The Crusades? I say, "NO!"
:)
Here's a nice Granny Smith Apple for you, brother!

SILLY.... RABBIT... TRICKS... ARE.... FOR... KIDS...!
YOU.... will Only... die... for Your Own... SINS!
(Deu 24:16) The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
AND....
(Romans 3:10-11-12) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
(Rom 3:11) There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
(Rom 3:12) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
