Are we destined to an afterlife of pitch blackness? Do we know we're dead? If the mind, body and spirit are three separate things, then does a soul feel and/or think? Is a soul even real? I don't mind religious views, but I'm trying to approach this scientifically, because I'm scared of death and what lies beyond.

Everyone has their own idea. There's no way to know for sure until after you die. Personally I believe that when you die your soul (which is you) travels throughout the universe and when your ready you can be reincarnated elsewhere. You do this over and over until you've brought all the different aspects of your soul into harmony. When this happens you reach what many call enlightenment and rejoin with the great devine. This is my personal belief though. For all I know I could die and find myself before the gates of hades. lol. There's really no way to know for sure and anyone who claims to KNOW (it's different from believe) is just plain arrogant.

When we die we are to stay buried until Jesus returns. Then he will send us to Heaven or Hell depending on how we have done.
Back in 1976 a security guard found me dead, under a parked car. Called for Paramedics. As they were rescuing me my sole left my body and I watched them remove me, put me in the ambulance and take me to the hospital. Where I was brought back. A crowd had gathered around the car and I was above them and I can remember thinking "How nice they weren't blocking my view.". A year later a film came out called "Life After Death" and I went to see it, to see if it matched with what I had experienced? It did. Other films on this have been made too. The odds, at that time, of a person experiencing a Life after Death was 1/32 -1/33, in their life.

I like the evidence that leads to the possibilties of life after death by facing the unknown rather than turning from it.

How can the born blind have the same visions of the seeing people?

Many of us hope that there some sort of survival of self after death. It is likely a combination of fear of death, ego, and our evolutionarily refined drive to survive.

It is impossible to prove in the survival of personality after death:

Through the science of parapsychology it has been proven that clairvoyance exists (parapsychologists stopped trying to statistically prove its existence back in the 50's; they have been concentrating on how/why it works since then) .

To prove the survival of personality after death, some piece of information that only the person that passed on would know would have to be revealed to the living.

The information would either be verifiable by other means or not.

If the information was verifiable then it could, also, have been found out through clairvoyance.

If it is unverifiable then it is not proof.

many different people of many different religions say many different things... being the Jewish/atheist that i am, i think that when we're dead, we're dead; however, many religions believe in a heaven and a hell (such as Christianity); others, like Judaism, believe that there is a "heaven", but the idea of hell is not included; and, of course, there are many other afterlife beliefs that i can't name; so i suppose it's all up to you to choose what you want to believe... explore the different religeons and aspects of the life (and the afterlife), and choose whichever you see to be true. good luck.

The afterlife of pitch blackness idea persists because some people just can;t accept non-existnce. But non-existence it shall be, for you and me.

try to hold your breath for a minute or so, and tell me what do you see? you will reach to the limit that u feel you will leave this life, you will see things that others will not see.

you move to the life of Burzokh (life of grave) staying there, until God command the day of judgement to start, and then you will wake up from the ground toward your lord, and then God will have the final word of whom goes to Hell and whom goes to paradise?
