I translated it as "Erfahrst Sie einer heisse Sommer in Jena?" on Y!A Deutschland and got a fair bit of abuse.

If I wanted to ask that question, I'd say:
Sind die Sommer in Jena heiß? (summers in general)
Ist der Sommer in Jena dieses Jahr heiß? (the summer this year)
Then you don't have the problem of having to decide what person or how many of them you are addressing.
You can also substitute "heiß" for "warm".
BTW, I read what the j*rks on Y!A Deutschland wrote - God, how rude.

Or you could say:

Which would mean:

I used to help with translations, but I find that those translations services are not always accurate and you get something like "My hovercraft is full of eels" when you want "Do you experience a hot summer in Jena?"
Then comes the snarky replies. You lose all the way around

You can't translate "experience" always with "erfahren". Sometimes it is "erleben" as well, but in this case it would not be very colloquial either.
You would not use the singular form, it is always assumed that more than one person experiences the weather. ( ;-))
Edit:
I thought about the difference between "erleben" and "erfahren", and it's "erleben" if you can't do anything about your experience and "erfahren" if you are able to learn from it and change the outcome next time, due to "Erfahrung"
