I notice that when police train K-9 units, the dogs are taught to be loyal to their handler and that people are not allowed to pet them because the dog is extremely protective.

Are these dogs allowed to be spayed or neutered or are they allowed to keep "what God gave em?'"

I would imagine that it might vary from department to department. But I when I was trained, I was told that neutering the K-9s was not a common practice since it tends to make a dog (police dog or otherwise) a bit more docile. And I've never seen or worked with a neutered K-9.

As for the loyalty part, yeah, they do love and protect their handlers. However, many police dogs (NOT ALL) are socialized and can be placed in regular public settings without being aggressive. I've taken a dog (German Shepherd) to a school for a demonstration and the kids loved to pet him. A lot of it depends on the breed and training, but, if the officer tells you it's OK, you can pet the dog.

The ones in our sheriff's department are all neutered. I've never seen a policy one way or the other on it, to be honest.

ha ha that's like the funniest question I've read so far! but i would think that they would, just so that the dog isn't focused on the ladies lol
