Saundra,
It's important to know you are not Janet Jackson. What worked for her may not work for you. Maintaining proper weight is a more simple formula then most people realize. If you consume more calories then you burn you will gain weight. There are also other factors one being exercise. When you exercise you burn more calories, speed up your metabolism, and decrease your appetite.
I lost about 47 lbs in 7 months. It's been a year and I have kept it off. Some things I did: eating smaller portions more often during the day. Instead of a small breakfast (or no breakfast) medium lunch and then spend the evening eating, eat 4 to 5 small meals a day. Concentrate on eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and meats. Especially lean meat. My co-workers tease me now because whenever we go out to eat I eat grilled chicken breasts with mustard instead of majo.
Find an exercise that you enjoy doing. When I was in college I used to box. I tried doing Tae Bo and love it. It reminds me of my college days. For you it might be walking, tennis or bike riding. The important thing is find something you enjoy doing or you will lose interest and quit. Do your workout at least 30 minutes 5 days a week.
Stay away from sugars, and limit your carbohydrates to only a small portion of your diet.
If you follow this, you will lose weight. Don't worry about how fast it is going, slow and steady wins the race.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), weight training a few days a week but never work on the same muscle group two days in a row (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

It isn't likely to lose 80 lbs by January. You can lose a significant amount, though.
Personally, I recommend the Atkins Diet. First thing you do is get rid of all of your bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, and cereal. Stock up on meat, cheese, eggs, and vegetables. For breakfast, have 5 eggs, cooked how you like, and a huge glass of V8 juice. For lunch, egg, chicken, or turkey salad on a bed of lettuce with blue cheese dressing. For supper, any kind of meat, roasted, baked, grilled, or fried, and 3 sides of vegetables (like, green salad, steamed carrots, and corn on the cob). You can have all the butter, sour cream, and cream cheese you want, but no bread, bagels, pretzels, cornbread, cake, ice cream, or popsicles.
If you want dessert, have cheesecake, or dark chocolate.
The basis of the Atkins diet is that it is carbohydrates (sugar) that makes you fat, not fat. So eat anything you want that has little or no carbs in it.
You will lose weight rapidly, but you also need to go walking, or add some exercise to your regimen, or your skin won't shrink and you'll look all saggy. Also, if you cheat, cheat big, enjoy it, then back on your diet the next day.

First, congratulations in wanting to lose weight the proper way...
You do NOT want to diet. You want to learn how to properly eat. By simply changing your diet to the 'right' foods and adding moderate exercise, you will find you'll lose substantial weight and even possibly 80# by January.
You need to commit to sticking to eating right...I lost 30# by changing my eating habits, I actually cut my calories and had more food than I ever imagined because it was the 'right' foods!
Consider consulting a dietitian for proper methods to lose weight safely without depriving your body the foods and healthy fats it needs to survive. See below for how I did it!

You should never loose more then 1-2lbs a week. So no, you cannot loose 80lbs in a healthy manner by January. Keep in mind Jannet Jackson was working out with pro trainers and kept on a very strict diet plan. Her weight loss was not healthy though. If you are loosing more then 2lbs a week, you are loosing muscle, not fat. Your body will start to shut down on you and you will get ill. I had lap band surgery. I was consuming over 3k calories a day like every other american. I now eat about 1k calories a day and I've lost 82lbs in a year, and thats a healthy weight loss. I didn't even need to excersise. Too many people come on this website and ask how to loose weight fast, it can't happen fast. Its not possible to loose that much weight in 4 months, even if you starve yourself. Good Luck To Ya.

You need to greatly decrease meats or stop them. And all soda pop too. I could not get anything off until I did stop both of those. Fruit juices have a lot of calories, so eat only fresh fruit.
Fresh fruit and veg.s you should make your main foods.
And do a lot of exercise. Do you have the will?
