I am 5'2" and 165lbs. 170 before I started the diet. Within 4 days I lost 5 lbs but I still need to lose more to get down to a healthy weight. I'm taking vitamin supplements to help with the loss but I have been reading that severely overweight people shouldn't do the 1000 calorie diet. I want to lose weight fast though. According to the food guide website I should be consuming 600 more calories then I have been. But I really don't want to and I do fine without them. Should I stop the 1000 calorie diet or should I keep going? Do you think my constant exhaustion is from the loss?

your exhaustion is a sight of bodys starvation mode - you are seriously slowing down your metabolism and contributing to yo-yo dieting.
body needs 70cal/hour just for basic functioning (like when you are in coma) for a person over 150lbs and thats 1680cal/day.
all you are losing is water weight and muscle not fat and will gain it all back if not more when you start eating normal again - be realistic - you are not gona be able to maintain under 1000cal diet for the rest of your life. you can lose fat only when you create just a slight deficit in daily caloric intake (not more than 500cal - e.g. if i need 2400cal/day to maintain i will lose weight by eating 1900cal/day)

Your constant exhaustion is definitely from the 1000 calorie diet. You should be eating at least 1500 calories per day, more if you are a teenager or if you're really active. A person in a hospital bed in a coma requires 1000 calories per day. Everyone else requires more. You should definitely work your way up to eating more. You'll still loose weight.

Here's a rule of thumb from the American Diabetic Association (good for diabetics, low-carb, or loosing weight): take a 12-inch dinner plate and divide it into fourths. Fill 1/4 with carbs. Fill 1/4 with meat or meat substitutes. Fill the remaining half with non-starchy vegtables. On the side, have one serving of fruit and one serving of low-fat dairy. You can skip the meat and veggies for breakfast, and you can skip the veggies at lunch. You can even break it up and have part of your meal as a snack later if you want. Following this rule of thumb will help you eat a balanced diet and make sure you get all the nutrients your body needs.

Good luck on your weight loss!

As a medical professional I can safely say that you should take the advice Louise has given you with a pinch of salt.

I haven't read the rest of the answers but hers stands out as startling inaccurate. You need a balance diet of carbs, protein and even a small amount of fat. 1000 calories on a regular basis is just not enough to survive on.

Putting it very crudely we are nothing, but highly processed food. 1000 calories is dangerous in the long term.

My advice is to reduce your diet by 500 calories from your normal intake - or by a thousand calories if your normal intake was particularly high. Then exercise - 3 or 4 times a week at your local gym, 30 minutes on the treadmill or the rowing machine.

Honey, this is bad for you. I tried this once or twice, I was starving and only did this for 2 days max. You should try to eat healthier. Balanced Meals and Snacks. Try and eat 1500-1800 calories a day for weight loss.ONLY VERY OBESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE ON THE 1000 CALORIE DIET! You are not very obese, so don't do it. It will MURDER your metabalism and you could wind up with and eating disorder if you do it too long. I AM NOT SAYING you have an eating disorder, but diet like this can trigger it.

Not to break your bubble, but the initial 5lbs weight loss in 4 days is due purely to water loss, not fat loss.

Yeah, you can live on a 1000 calorie diet if you want, but after few days it becomes a battle of free will. That's not something which I enjoy. I prefer to lose weight by taking very long bike rides, like 2-4 hours while keeping my diet normal. I typically lose 2000 calories per bike ride, which equals 3 days of your diet. And as a bonus, I don't even feel hungry after I'm done because I keep my carb intake low.

Yep, you won't be able to keep this up much longer. You need to bring up your food intake to at least 1200 a day, no less! Temper your exercise. You need to sweat for about 30 minutes a day. You can even break it up into 3 sets of 10 minutes each during the day but you need to sweat! One more tip..eat what you like (healthy is better obviously). You'll never stick to an eating plan if you hate every meal and not all of us are the salad and tofu types. Just keep it to1200 Remember, the longer you workout the more cals you can add to your 1200 as well. So if you workout and drop say 300 calories you can add those to your total intake for that day..cool eh? If you follow this lifestyle you'll be losing about 2-3 pounds of healthy weight a week. Good luck. Be patient with yourself you'll get there.

You don't need to consume over 1000 calories a day. As long as you're getting your protein. The reason why this country is so fat is because people say you should be getting more calories then your body needs. I had lap band surgery and went from over 3k calories a day to 1k calories a day, i've lost 82lbs in a year. No excersise either, just eating the right portion sizes. Stay away from High Fructose Corn Syrup. This crap is in almost every american food. Your body can only absorb 20grams of this per day and stores the rest as fat. A single soda can has 40 grams, so you might as well eat a cup of sugar. A healthy weight loss is no more then 1-2lbs a week, if you are loosing more, you are loosing muscle not fat. In my experience, diets don't work but if you are determined enough i'm sure you can do it. Don't be in such a rush to loose weight, it'll take you at least 4 months for a healthy weight loss. Good Luck to ya :)

Please stop the 1000 calorie diet, you are depriving your body and it is not only eating fat but also muscle. If you eat properly you have an abundance of energy not a lack of energy.

I was overweight by 30#, I was eating a light diet of a smoothie for breakfast, salad for lunch and light dinner. I was actually gaining weight!

It turns out I was depriving my body of nutrition and the healthy fats, so my body went into 'starvation mode' and was actually holding on to extra fat making me gain weight.

I then discovered the 'right' way to eat. The correct balance of foods including the proper fats needed to survive. It was more food than I ever imagined and I dropped pounds like crazy. I have maintained a 30# weight loss for years because I now know how to balance out the right foods so that my body does not starve.

It is not a 'diet' it is knowing the right foods to eat.

Low calories and vitamins is just danger waiting to happen...

Please consult a dietitian on the proper methods for eating right and losing weight before you find your self passed out and ill from starving...

That is to low but it also depends on your age? Adult female should have 2000 calories a day so 1500 minimum would be a good place to start.

considering ur weight and height, u should lose a little more but i recomend not to do the 1000 calorie diet.... it does kill your metabolism MAJORLY. You always feel exhausted and tired because your body hasnt recieved the calories and energy need through the day....To lose weight, you should eat a big breakfast, medium lunch, and light dinner... Try a little weight lifting because you still burn calories for the next 48 hours when you lift weights... I highly recomend staying active (running, playing dance dance revolution)....but jus stay to a healthy diet...dont starve yourself because it will only cause you to stuff your face the next meal to come....
