The law requires overtime be paid after 40 hours. Some people who work on salary are not entitled to overtime though. You can check on line to see if your job falls into that category. Some California hospitals I've worked in pay time and a half after 8 hours....union regulations.

Not in the US. If you work more than 40 hours in a work week or 80 hours in a pay period (i.e. more than 40 one week and less than that the second week of the pay period) the employer is required to pay overtime if the company employs more than a few people. They can get into trouble with the labor dept if they don't and some states like California have more restrictive labor laws.

In most states you are entitled to overtime if you work more than 40 hours in a week.

In California, I believe they give overtime if you work more than 8 hours in a day.

So, assuming that you are not in California, I think you could work more than 8 hours in a day, so long as you did not work more than 40 hours in the week, and get regular time.

If you are paid hourly, then you would be entitled to overtime according to the Department of Labor (DOL). If you are a managment type and hence exempt...then there would be no overtime regardless of the number of hours worked.
