I know you don't expect - or even want - an answer to this one, and it is a question that has been asked before, so you are not the first. In fact people have been asking it ever since the concept of God first occurred. I guess the simple answer is because pain and suffering are part of life - you can't have the one without the other. Call it "collateral damage" if you like. There are some things that even a god cannot change, supposing that God sets up rational processes in order to achieve his ends. For instance, you can't really have continents without earthquakes and volcanoes, because that is how continents are formed. You can't have DNA (and therefore us) without the possibility of cancer, bacteria and viruses. The very things that enable our existence also cause us pain and suffering - it is the human condition. Fortunately we also have intelligence and compassion - so we can, for instance, search for cures for cancer and ease other peoples' pain and suffering, if we choose to. That we often choose not to cannot be blamed on God.
Well, I expect you still think God is a "tosser", but in the end it is only we who can ease other people's pain and suffering - to use the hackneyed phrase, "God has no hands but our hands".
And by the way, I don't find your question in the least upsetting. It is one that has been asked countless times before!

It seems as though non-Christians think that we as Christians have all the answers or that we don't wrestle with these same questions. I've wondered why there is so much hatred and racism in the world. The only way I can understand it is that it is our own free will. We are the ones who allow wars, allow children to go to bed hungry, we are the ones who walk past a homeless person as if they don't exist. We elect politicians who care more about their friends pockets then the fact that their companies are destroying the environment. I could go on and on. But I think you get my point. We all have choices and if we see someone suffering then it is our responsibility to show kindness. Yes, it would be easy if God would wipe away all the pain in the world. But that's not going to happen. My father once told that I was trying to question the reasoning of God who is the Creator of reason. God and God alone knows why things happen this way. I kinda question why we as human beings always want to know everything. Why? Will it really make a difference? This is just one persons opinion, I'm not trying to start a debate with anyone or receive hate mail. Take care.

( "A question they've been wrestling w/since the first theologian farted." Jon. M - teeehee!! :)
Are you questioning the concept of a higher power, or are you questioning Christianity an/or other religions that traffic in future rewards for good behaviour?
To ascribe human qualities like jealousy, favoritism, anger or apathy to a supposedly unknowable & perfect "Higher Being" is so bizarre it's embarrassing.
Likewise, it sorta' reeks of twatty arrogance to decide, via our own carbon-based organic brain, that We on Earth are the End and All of It.
Erm...I'm not sure where I was headed with this - really, I just wanted to answer your post 'coz I'm a ho' for a UK accent, even if it's only in writing. Sounds like you're doing the best thing to figger it all out - reading and asking. Knowledge is Power. Or something like that.
The enemy of man is the tyranny of a dull mind.
Hey - why do you guys call garter belts "suspenders"? In the USA, dem's usually worn by big ol' boys named Bubba.
I think I love you.

I know it seems horrible, believe me when I say EVERYONE has had tough times, even Christians. Christians see these things and some of it happens to ones we hold dear but as you are a follower you see that God has a plan for it all. We don't understand it now but one day we will. Someone once discribed it like this to me, If you look as someone making a tapestry but they are taller than you, you only see the bottem. The bottem looks horrible, with all sorts of strings hanging, all knotted and going everywhere but if then you ask the weaver to show you what he's doing and he shows you, you see the most beautiful pattern of yarn put together to make something great.

A side note to Jaime... Is there something wrong with your computer that forces your answers to be ONE WORD LINES? We appreciate your input, but the FORMAT is becoming very ANNOYING... Thanks, dear!
As for God allowing suffering, please choose from any of the below articles to help you understand the Christian perspective of this issue.... from a great website called "gotquestions.org."
My only other "observation" about this question, and the answers especially, that it seems that the atheists who keep answering "there is no god" seem to use this phrase to avoid thinking as much as they accuse Christians/believers who say, "there is a God" of not thinking. It's just as "dismissive" a phrase as saying, "you're an idiot for asking such a dumb question" instead of actually thinking about that question, and giving an INTELLIGENT answer. Just MHO !!!
Have a blessed day!

As a Christian I do not have the answer. I can theorise but not be definite.
I could be wrong but the faith centres around eternity and in terms of eternity which is beyond our mental capacity to imagine all suffering is for only a little while. To the sufferer it is a very big little while indeed

Mouse, this is a question they've been wrestling with since the first theologian farted.
How can an all-powerful and all-loving God allow suffering? I don't think anybody on YA is going to come up with an answer to it.
If you're really interested in some of the answers real thinkers have come up with -- as compared to you and me -- google "theodicy" and see what you get.
