My friends says she wants a "real camera" for her birthday. She is going to be going to photography school next year. She doesn't want a normal digital camera. She wants one that professional protographers use. ..I have no idea what this is- but some of her friends and I are looking into getting one big present for her and this might be it. Can you tell me more about "real cameras?" Also, where can I get a good one with excellent color quality?

Go on Cnet.com and check out the digital SLR cameras. They had changeable lenses. I personally use a D80 from Nikon which costs about 12 hundred, but there are good less expensive ones. Make sure it has a manual setting for she will need that in school to learn depth of field and shutter settings.

The best, most professional kind of cameras are AF 35mm SLRs. They have virtually unlimited lenses, most of them w/ fast and slow shutter speed and large aperatures (both very good) They have long exposure for detail work and usually, if they have the same systems as a digital camera, it's probably at least twice as good. Color quality is not a question of the camera, but of the film. It will almost always produce amazing picture quality, about 13 megapixels equivelent and up.

If you learn how to use it, the overall experience and versatility (plus the fact that you can produce the same images if not better at a lower cost for the equipment) makes this camera better than digital SLRs.

So if your friend is going to go to photography school and needs a great camera to use with all the stuff she'll learn, get an AF 35mm SLR.

For the best ones, go to your local camera store (no, not the camera section in best buy, a camera ONLY store) so you can talk to an experienced person face to face.

Hope this helped!

im guessing by 'real' camera she means a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) or an SLR (single lens reflex)
dont go leaping into a shop to buy a DSLR straight away- find out what the school reccomends first. if you do keep the reciepts! there is no point in getting a cheap DSLR- youve come this far so you might aswell go the whole way!
a good idea for a creative ameture is a 'prosumer' camera, which is basicly a digital compact, with a good lens on it, and a host of sophisticated features.
a good 'and fun' way to start out is with a Holga. this is a small plasitc camera, which is designed to take strange pictures that are blurred, and colour leaks ect are frequent. they can be had for £10 new.
if you do go the prosumer way, look for brands like Fuji, Canon, Samsung, Panasonic, Sony ect
For DSLRs, look for Nikon, Canon, Sony and Olympus (Olympus are genrally looked down on in the photography world because they are cheaper- but you get very good results for your money, and in a magazine poll, it scored higher than the Canon 350D)

you can usually tell the colour quality of a camera by the physical size of the lens- the bigger the lens is, the more light that can enter the lens, and the more balanced the colour is (which is why camera phones always take grey pictures)

good luck!

and save those pennies!

It has been said before, but it needs to be said again. Check with the school, or if you can't, have your friend check. Some schools have requirements regarding the equipment they want their students to be using.

It is my understanding that most, if not all, photographic schools today want their students to start with film cameras not digital. Buying her a digital camera would be a nice gesture, but if the school wants her to have a film camera to start with, a digital won't do her much good for her studies.

A good friend of my just sent is son to film school this fall. They had very specific requirements regarding the equipment he needed, from camera and lenses to his computer and its software.

Make sure you are looking at what she needs, not necessarily what she wants.

All you gotta do is go to one of your basic camera stores like national american camera exchange( there also online at nationalcamera.com) but you wanna look for a camera that is SLR. its what most photographers use. Most cameras (like slr's) can have diffrent lenses which make a diffrent perspective of the picture. well those are just a few things of info...hope it was good

It's probably smart to check with the school your friend will go to and see what they recommend (or require) for beginning students.

It'll probably be a Digital SLR - something like a Canon XTi or Nikon D 40.

Hope it's something you guys can afford.

Wow! What a nice thing to do!

Try this first....Compare digital cameras here... What she probably wants is the type in the z series.
or try here:

And remember a camera is only as good as the printer you hook it up to. (!!!)
