My husband has high blood pressure and wants to lose 20-30 pounds. We did a fast with our church that was extremely strict(i.e. no sugars, carbs, meat, dairy, etc) and he felt great after the first two weeks. Problem is I felt miserable and we have two children who hate trying new things. I want to start cooking better and he insists that a carb-free diet will help him shed the weight and lower his blood pressure, but I have also heard the same benefits can be achieved through a sugar-free diet, which would help everyone in the family. Has anyone tried these diets and can attest to the benefits of them? There are plenty of books out there but I haven't found one that seems to have the answers I need. So I figured I would seek those who have been there-done that! Thanks everyone!

You actually cannot go either way. Your body needs sugar and other carbs to stay healthy. Go with the low-carb and stay away from foods with added sugar.

It would be ridiculous to go on a carb free diet...you'd only really be eating meat! I've followed the Atkins plan for almost 4 years..it's LOW carb and subsequently sugar free...you get your carbs from sensible choices..veggies and, if you wish, whole grains. You need to read the books. I'd suggest the Atkins New Diet Revolution (copyright 2003 or so..stay away from the new Atkins books). I lost 125 pounds in 12 months and have kept it off 3 years. Never felt better. Also, my lipid profile is normal now for the first time in my adult life.

Good luck to your husband!

I don't have a book reference for you but sugar-free was the way to go for me. It made a world of difference to blood pressure and weight. My carbs are whole grain, low fat protein (meat) and lots of veg and some fruit.

Good luck!
