Switzerland has four different languages spoken in different regions and English is not one of them. You will find a lot of English speaking Swiss people in big cities like Zurich, Berne and Lucerne where tourists frequently visit.
In other cantons (cities), The younger generation speaks English very well as for the older ones, other than the train station and post office you may have difficulty finding an older Swiss person who speaks English very well.

specific. English is the language of company (e.g. with the massive monetary/chemical companies that are right here) and with a severe share of foreigners, maximum sturdy issues are in the 4 sturdy languages (french, german, italian and romansch) and English besides. it extremely is learnt at college, each and every so often as a 2nd language, and each so often as a 0.33. i've got on no account met a swiss guy or woman who did not talk a sprint of English, in spite of the actuality that they are very modest (to the component to being stressful each and every so often) and could in many situations inform you they don't talk English (then communicate appropriate English to you!).

Yes, usually older people. Most young people speak English but not always. Some young people are still bi-lingual or even tri-lingual but choose to learn French, Italian or some other language as a second language.

Farmers DO NOT speak english at all, as an example. English is spoken mostly in the major cities (Geneva, Zurich, Bern, Lausanne, Lucern, Basel)
Do not expect people in the country-side to speak two languages either.

There are probably quite a few. Switzerland has four official languages and English isn't one of them. Despite that, many of them speak very good English.

Try learning a little French or German before you go - you'll make friends easier.
