JROTC is not dorky. Yes there are those who will laugh and call you a dork, but let' em. You may come to find that they were if fact the dorks. I'm 48 years old, was in JROTC, and found out that yery thing. Most of the ones laughing at me then are ones whose opinions I could care less about today. There are some things I would change if I could go back to high school, but 4 years of JROTC is not on that list.
Every thing you say in your question is true, but here is something else to consider. Even though JROTC does not in any way obligate you to the military, the training can be used to get an extra stripe or two after basic training, (depending on branch of service). That is should you decide to go into the military.

As you said, it works for the college resume and you have to ask yourself why? The reason is that it develops leadership and an understanding of social and political structures as well as a system that allows for the "Command & Control" leadership style of the military while the school system is promoting the collective think tank philosophy of "Thinking Outside the Box", "Brainstorming" and independent thought.
As far as the "keeping you in shape", there is some physical aspect to JROTC, but that varies greatly depending on the instructors. You'll probably still have to be your own inspiration for physical fitness.
Aside from the developmental benefits above, should you decide to enter the military when you graduate, you can do that with a couple of extra stripes following Basic Training.
You'll find the ones that think it "dorky" are the ones that haven't thought a lot about the future, and want to go to the best "Party College" rather than actually plan on a career or higher degree. Good luck to you!

Many people consider JROTC to be dorky. Why? Because people go there thinking that it will make them better people...what kind of people go to those things? Then it ends up being a place for dorky kids to meet other dorky kids. I'm not saying all units are like that and all schools treat JROTC the same. All schools are different; some schools have a good football team, and others have a good marching band.
Many people join JROTC because it might help them get into a better college. That is fine, but don't expect that it is only JROTC helping you there. You have to be well-rounded as a person. If you join the chess club and JROTC, play soccer and run cross-country as well.
As far as getting you into shape, JROTC will not do much for you. I go to USNA, and most of the 'ROTC nazis' that I have seen are overweight and not very athletic. Like I said, play sports and run.

If you think that getting into a good college, being a better person, and being healthy are "dorky" then please drop out of JROTC now. You are wasting everyones time. Communitry College is full of overweight, parasites who were more concerned with being cool in high school than with being a decent person. You will fit right in.

About as dorky as taking Calculus, Chemisry, etc while in high school.
Of course, while you are suceeding in life after high school, those who thought it was dorky, will be happily stocking shelves at walmart.
