The cat is about 5 to 6 months old, and was left on a friend's porch. He has been jumping in our tub and going no. 1 and 2 right by the drain. When we put the litter box in the tub, he went on the other end, away from the drain. We also closed the bathroom doorand put the box in the office, he went in the correct room, but not in the box. We place him in the box ALL THE TIME! Does anyone know a trick? I'm getting fed up.

Go to about.com - there's a whole set of articles on how to deal with kitties that won't use their litter box. See if any of these help, and if not, you can email the cat lady (i don't know what her name is, but she answers questions)

When we litter trained our cat I made her sit in the litter pan until she had to go. I know it kinda sounds like a daunting task. if you can kind of get a feel for her potty habits it will help. I would also recommend the unscented littler idea. It is possible that he doesn't like the smell. or if he is going number one on a specific item a small towel or something, or even when you go to clean up the mess try putting that under the litter. That way he can smell his urine in that spot. Same thing for the number two problem when you find he's gone number two pick it up and put it in the box and show him that way he should start getting the idea... this smell goes in here. good luck.

You've got a stubborn rascal!

Leave a few inches of water in the tub and close him in the bathroom with his box. The water will break him of using the tub.

Now, you might want to take him for a check-up. Usually cats are good about learning to use the box, and if they won't there more often than not is a problem.

Good luck!

Buy or borrow a sky kennel/ animal transport carrier, medium size. Put unscented cat litter in a litter box in the rear of the carrier. In the middle of the carrier put a small blanket or towel for soft bedding. Then last, put food and water dishes (spill proof water bowl or water bottle attached to door so kitty doesn't spill water and be without) near the front of the carrier. Animals naturally don't want to potty near their food or bed, so kitty will use the box. Maintain this procedure for 2-3 weeks, kitty will likely be box trained by then.

thats probably why he was left on the porch -
first thing - call the SPCA or animal shelter and report finding him if you havent done so already... its illegal to keep any stry you find without reporting it first - you can be charged with theft.

ok use Non- Scented clumping litter..... what kind of litter box are you using? some cats dont like the automatic ones...
has he been fixed or checked for health problems??
as you dont know his past he could have been from a farm or someplace they didnt have a litter box..
best thing is to retrain by keeping him in a kennel with a litter box...
