Customary no. Practical? Absolutely. That doesn't mean she has to be with you when you buy the actual ring, but why not go 'browsing' together. The last thing you want to do is buy something she has to pretend to like for the rest of her life.
Congratulations!

It's not customary, but it's practical. I think it's a lot more romantic to "pop the question" and then shop for the ring if you decide to take her shopping with you. Otherwise, there's this weird tension everytime you guys go out: this restaurant sucks, so I hope he's not proposing here. You know. That.
If you're set on proposing with ring in hand, you might grab her mom or sister or best friend to take to the jewlery store with you. Pick someone with whom she gets along well and someone who knows her pretty well. Women (most of the time) really love to get involved in marriage proposal plans, and we have a tendency to pick up on subtleties of people's style. Or, if you're the type, you might pick a horrible picture from a magazine. Something you know she'd hate. Ask her how she likes it, and she'll tell you what she likes instead.

I went shopping with my fiance for my ring. We both picked it out together, and he was so happy he didn't have to make the decision alone. I think it is a good idea to take her because this is a ring that she is going to wear for the rest of her life. Even though we picked out the rings together, it was still a surprise because I had no idea when he was going to propose. If you want, you can even get her to pick out two rings that she likes and then you make the final decision so it will still be a surprise.
Good luck!

I told my fiance at the time when we were dating that if he decided to marry me I wanted him and only him to go pick out the ring because that way I know what he picked out would come from his heart and I wouldn't know when he was going to pop the question... And I love the ring!!!
I also hear that if you take a girl with you the price of the ring shoots way up so if you want to save some cash don't take your girl...shh.
I know a lot of girls say the bigger the diamond the better; don't listen to them, if it comes from your heart that's all that matters. Good luck!

No, not at all. Choose what you think she might like, and that fits your budget comfortably. It's usually a red flag if a 'girl' HAS to have a certain ring. A mature woman understands the symbolism of the ring!

Try this Go to the mall and just say "hey, I saw a watch in here that I would like to look at." If she strays and looks at some rings, just keep an eye on her and see which one she eye's the most. Basically, a girl will love a diamond no matter what.

If she knows its coming and/or you've been talking about it... its definately ok for her to go with so you can get some ideas on her personal taste and see what looks good on her hand.
When my boyfriend dragged me into the jewelry store, i thought i knew what kind of ring i wanted... when i looked at rings on my hand, i'm happy he didnt buy what i thought i wanted. It looked Horrible on my hand.
All i ask, is let her know what you plan to do (take her to try on rings) i wasnt warned.. and we wasted a LOT of shopping time tryin to get me to stop hyperventalating.

My boyfriend and I went engagement ring shopping this weekend and I pointed out ones I liked and we tried a few on. He hasn't proposed yet - that will be a surprise! but at least we both know that the ring will be one that we both love because, like you said, this ring is forever
