I live out of town from my parents' and our family's parish, and I'm thinking about joining one up where I live. However, I don't want to no longer be a member of my old parish, even though I'm not really an active member there anymore. If I officially become a member of this new parish, will I have to forfeit my membership at my old parish? I know I can still worship wherever I please, but I want something official so I can obtain records someday if needed.

you can only be a member of one parish

when i was away at college I attended the catholic church near the school and kept my membership to my parish at home

but you should do whatever feels right for you and if you have any concerns talk them over with your priest

you will still be able to obtain records no matter where you go to church

As I understand it, and I am by no means an authority, you can register in more than one parish; it's kind of like having "dual citizenship". You may want to request "reserve" membership at one, though, because otherwise both may send you offering envelopes and if they aren't used it will save the parish the money to print/distribute them. You could then have your records in the "active" membership parish.

Best bet, though, is to call one or the other parish offices and ask what they recommend.

You can be an official member of one parish only. However, you can attend Mass at any Catholic parish.

Either transfer your records to your new parish and register there as a member, or continue to attend services there but keep your official registration to your old parish. Whichever works best for you.

I work in one parish and frequently attend Mass there, but I live and am registered in another in another town. I also attend there.

Sure, if you've got the money anything is possible.
