take your cues from you hostess. If she mentions a busy day that day or the next then don't stay too long. After 30 -45 minutes say something about leaving. It's better to leave too soon than stay too long.

I think you should sit down and converse with your hosts, although the amount of time you stay depends on your schedule and the time of the dinner. If you have a set time of how long you plan to stay (like at a party dinner), you could leave to your own discretion. Some people like to retire early after a meal, others like to sit and have their coffee or dessert and talk afterwards. I usually stay at least an hour before politely saying goodbye, when making your exit you should be sure to thank your host for inviting you.

I believe an hour is sufficient. The hostess has worked hard and long to make her home presentable and cook the meal. I assume she's tired.

Yesterday I was invited for a noon lunch. My hostess kept me for 8 hours! 3 times I said I really had to go.

She was well-educated, well-read an excellent conversationalist, didn't seem lonely to me, but...,
8 HOURS? !!!

After you help wash the dishes and clean the table... then, some
quiet conversation, a cup of Joe, maybe? Then, your off.

A good sign is when one of the hosts slips into slippers, if they put on a robe you definitely went a tad too long.

Plan to stay a half an hour. If things are going really well, stay another half an hour. Make departure noises and if your host begs you to stay, then stay. If not head home. Try not to be the last guest to leave!!!!

Lotta variables to this...so u can't answer just a set time.

But if u are perceptive u can sorta guess when is the right time to leave.

If they talk about bein tired, goin to bed, or havin work to do, then u can pretty much guess that it's time to leave.

But, if they invite u to watch a movie or play a game or somethin, then u can know they want u to stay longer.

as long as you feel comfortable. if the host has kids, be aware if the kids need to go to bed, if it's getting too late and your hosts look sleepy, if the conversation is drying up, you just have to be aware of how things are going. if everything is going great, things are still rolling, and everyone is having fun, there's no time limit.

Untill you see your hosts getting tired, they`ll give you signs.." Oh, I guess, I should be heading off to bed, I have to head to work early tomorrow".They`ll say things like that....

But, if it`s a date, it might be a sleepover..That`s a whole different story.
