Delicate subject - Dogs seem more dependent upon their owner than a cat - a dog seems to communicate a certainty about their affections where as a cat sometimes leaves room for question- I have four of one and five of the other and my husband likes the predictable love that he gets from the dogs- he seems to thrive on it- I, on the other hand, appreciate the collected presence of cats- I love their calm natures and know that they love me for something more than food- I don't have to rival them for the dominate position- I don't need to be showered with affection to know that I am loved by them. I believe that difference depends upon ones ability to communicate with the animal- Dogs are easy to figure out -a cat, on the other hand, is a mystery and requires a unique disposition if you want to developer a good relationship with them- dogs tend to define their owners where as a cat leaves you to your own imagination as to where you stand in the world. The greatest difference perhaps is that the dog seeks out companionship while the cat can take it or leave it-one is a relationship based on a mutual dependency (dogs) while the other is based on a mutual emotional Independence. Does this define men and women?? Hummm.

The phrase "cats are a woman's best friend" does not exist. You just assume because they say dogs are a man's best friend, cats must be a woman's best friend. But you are wrong there.By man, they mean all civilization.Including men AND woman. So, dogs are friends to PEOPLE.No offense to cats, which I love, dogs will always be my best friend.
"Cats are a woman's best friend" is just a cheap untrue add-on people made up who didn't understand the original phrase in the first place.

Its an old expression and means about as much as "Gentlemen prefer Blondes" . Some basis in truth but its a broad generalization.
I have 2 dogs and 5 cats. My husband and I love them all and interact with all equally.

Well I know I love my cat =^.^= but I do know a guy who has four cats and loves them very much, so I guess cats can be anybodies best friend just like dogs.

well, actually when they say dogs are 'man's' best friend, i always thought they meant 'man' in general, like 'mankind', not males. but, generally - not always - men do prefer dogs and women cats. got to be a personality difference! we all know men are from mars and women from venus (ie. we're different) so why not that we prefer different pets? personally i like both.

Cats are no ones friend. They have no souls (and according to George Carlin eyebrows). When you die alone at home, they will eat your eyeballs first.
No, no, no seriously cats are cool. Low maintenance pet that you can interact with (unlike fish).

Because cats have a way of goin to the females when they sit down. Have you ever noticed that? I think its just that cats seem more feminine so guys like " Manly " pets. idk but thats my guess.
