Please do consider some newer and less known rifle recently produced by countries like Singapore (SAR 21), Israel (TAR 21), China (QBZ-95) , Germany, US, France etc.
Personally I prefer bullpup designs due to recoil efficiency, and side cocking rather than top cocking in M16 as it is easier and faster to reach from firing position. 5.56/ 7.62 dun matter.
I still think there isn't assualt rifle good enough to replace M16/M4A1 in my opinion.

the Robinson arms XCR.bar none the best design since the m1 garand.it uses the ultra reliable short stoke gas piston of the ak-47.it has the accuracy of the m-16/ar-15.it has the ability to change caliber and barrel length with out tools(with minimal training....and i DO mean minimal) by any soldier.don't take my word for it though check it out for yourself.
heres a link to their website
http://www.robarm.com/
the don't however use the bullpup design

Wow! Lot's to cover here. OK, a true "Assault Rifle" is one that fires more then 1 round per trigger pull. Those are automatic or selective fire weapons. Those are already illegal. You don't have to worry about those. Same with SMGs. Both illegal. Second, when you see gangsters, it's typically in a Hollywood film, and yes, films will have gangsters shooting automatic weapons. But you can't buy these legally. Background checks are federally required for every new firearms purchase in this country. So what's the reality here? The "Assault Rifles" that are sold legally are in fact military looking semi-automatic rifles that fire 1 bullet per trigger pull. They are functionally IDENTICAL to many fine hunting weapons. And usually these weapons don't even fire high powered rounds. If hunting were all this is about, I would agree with you. But it's not. If you look at the 2nd Amendment, and the gun rights amendments in many state constitutions, you won't see the word "hunting" even mentioned. The 2nd Amendment is about keeping weapons for defense. One last thing, to help clear up some misconceptions, a San Jose Police officer made a video about 20 years ago when all this Assault Rifle stuff started getting political. It describes the differences between true Assault Rifles, military looking semi-auto rifles and other semi-auto rifles. It's available on the web and I've linked to it. Take a few minutes and watch it and it will help you understand what is being talked about

The AK-47 is definitely the best AR. It has been used and is still used all over the world by everyone. It is simple to operate yet effective and accurate. And it has a cool design. You cannot say the AK-47 looks ugly in it's many different forms. Plus 7.62mm beats 5.56mm any day.

AK-47. None better. None are more proven for their reliability than the AK variant rifles. None have seen as much combat around the world as the AK. Are there better new rifles--more accurate, lighter, more powerful? Yes. Have any of these proven themselves in actual combat, over decades, in the harshest environments around the planet--from freezing cold to searing heat, arid desert to humid jungle--and still kept working? No!

Im a fan of AR-15s but that is my personal choice Im sure there is people who are gonna say the 5.56 round is too small and complain about how you have to keep it clean all the time. You know like die hard AK users

I'd agree the Galil is soundly engineered. I'm intrigued by the AR-180 but haven't fired one often enough to have a strong opinion about it.

The galil in my opinion is the best. Better gas system than the M16, with looser tolerances like the AK has, best of both worlds.

Where does one find a rifle that will physically assault someone for you?
That would be nice as feeding my Ar's is getting expensive with current ammo prices.
