I have a Corolla which gets 38 on the hiway/32 in town (automatic). When we bought it, we paid $99 over dealer invoice. I pre-negotiated the price using the dealer's web site (Tacoma, WA's Titus-Will). I confirmed the dealer's cost on Kelly Blue Book's site and they were using the same numbers.
Consumer Reports - available at the library - is a great way to get all the statistics.
A Yaris would do a little better, maybe up to 4 more MPG. It has decent acceleration. A Camry with a 4 will get 32 but the base price is higher.
Consider the Scion XB if roominess is a priority. The 2008 is a foot longer and HP has been increased. But expect 28 MPG. The Matrix is almost like a wagon; it uses the Corolla chassis.
Wait a bit and see what the 2008's are like. If there's no big differences, weigh your options; the 2007's may be discounted. Plus, be aware of the low interest rates Toyota offers.

By trials and tribulations, the Corolla has been around since the late 1970's. The Corolla is a separate company by Toyota so it is reliable. The Yaris is new and still going through tests and recalls. Don't trust it. Not to mention getting parts for a Corolla are much easier to find and cheaper compared to the Yaris. The name Yaris sounds like the probable name of a fat lazy man somewhere in Europe. Get the Corolla . Good luck!!!!!

I would go with the Yaris because the it is roomier than the corolla especially in the driving position, If buying the Yaris or corolla make sure you get the side curtain airbags as a option, the yaris can get pricey if you add too many options.

The Yaris is better when it comes to gas mileage, but the Corolla has better acceleration. In my opinion, the Corolla is roomier. You're better off getting the Toyota Yaris.

Definitely Corolla
The Yaris is re-release of the Echo, because the Echo was such a failure. While the Corolla is a bit more longer then the Yaris, it also has more power and feels roomier. Gas MPG difference is barely any difference depending on how you drive. I currently drive a corolla and I get about high 30s on the highway and mid 30s on the city. Not spectacular, but good enough.

well i tell u wat i think about them. The yaris is the most fuel effeiceint and cheapest. It comes in a hatchback 2 door version and a compact sedan 4door. when it comes to space the yaris is ok. i went to the auto show and sat iside one of em. pretty roomy fro a compact sedan. Now the corolla is a different story. Its a pretty old car. The styling still hasnt changed in a bit which im not happy about. But its fuel is a little worse than the yaris not to be a big prob. The corolla is rommier than the yaris for sure. Now the accel fro both cars is about the same. I think the corolla is better accel. But if u buy the s version corolla its way better accel. If u want to learn more about the cars go to toyota.com

None. Toyota is good at resale value but it cost too much to maintain. I gave up Toyota and now I have a Honda Civic, Ford Fusion Hybrid and the left over 08 Prius that I took apart as a play toy.
My friend bought a Corolla the same day with my Civic and after 60K miles; my car costs $387 for maintenance and corolla came at $566. Toyota is made to be light for fuel efficiency and my driving habit just doesn't fit since I drive the car every where and pot holes don't exist for me.
Get away from the paper bags and find something else instead of looking forward to sell the car.

I have owned a 2005 corolla and now a 2007 Yaris hatchback. To me the yaris seems better buy cuz its cheaper, gets better gas mileage and it only has a 1.5 compared to a 1.8 but weighs less so to me it seems to get up to speed quicker. Far as room corolla got a little bit more but yaris has 3 glove boxes and storage under the spare tire at least in the hatchback. Plus insurance is going to be less

A few corrections to some of the responses:
The Corolla S has the same exact engine as the other Corolla models, so will not be much faster. It does, however, have a stiffer suspension and sportier wheels which enhances handling. It also has a body kit to enhance it's appearance. You might be thinking of the Corolla XRS (now discontinued I believe) which had a slightly de-tuned Celica GTS engine providing more than 160HP.
The Corolla is not being discontinued by Toyota. It is one of their best selling models in the US. The Auris model mentioned is only replacing the Corolla hatchback model in Europe (The Corolla sedan will stay) and will not be sold in the US.
