Ha- you answered my question (thanks) now I'll try to answer yours. There's actually a lot of controversy about just exactly how much an axillary (armpit) temperature varies from an oral or rectal. Most recently the thought is that it is actually probably closer than we used to think, although there can be a large variance based on technique. If you get a good spot and the child actually holds still, it may be less than the one degree difference than we used to think, however, if it's a small baby who is squirming and the thermometer isn't in there very good, it could be more than a degree off. I think you said your child is 4, so if they hold still for you, I would tend to take the number that you get under the armpit to be pretty accurate. Would they hold it under their tongue? I think that's probably a bit more accurate ultimately. The armpit answer is about as clear as mud, I know.

Body temperature should always be around 36.5 degrees Celsius. Within 1 degree of this is nothing to worry about, anything higher is a concern. If your babys temp gets to 39 or above you need to get straight to a doctor or hospital as this can cause the child to have seizures. Baby Panadol can be taken from 1 month old and will help to ease a temperature but try not to use it too often. A temperature is a sign of your child fighting whichever infection he or she may have.

the one we have is made specifically to go under the arm... and we had it in our diaper bag one day when we went to the doc because she was sick...
well the doc tried to get her temp, and it was not happening,,, lol,,, so i pullled out ours, and did it under the arm. and we also did the strip kind that you hold on the forehead. and the under arm one was the most accurate...
it is about placement tho, getting it right in the middle, and making sure the kid does not move around...

i do not add any degrees to this one, it seems to be accurate as is...
