I think you can only know for certain on your side, and as well as you know your partner (character, integrity, etc.) I personally had a long-distance engagement, and it sure made moving in together AFTER the wedding wonderful... On our wedding day I was so excited that he wouldn't be leaving soon. I think we had a few things going for us that made our long distance arrangement work--
1) We knew it would be no longer than a little over a year, and had already known each other for 3, having dated exclusively for one before the long distance started.
2) We were about 4 hours apart, and came to see each other at least once every other week (every weekend once we were engaged).
3) We were both very committed to the relationship-- and lead lives that didn't set us up for other issues. (I didn't hang out with single guys, he didn't hang out with single girls)
4) We had a cell phone plan that let us talk to each other with unlimited minutes
5) We were both mature and responsible BEFORE we started dating

So, I think if you have clearly outlined certain expectations (like knowing that the situation would not continue indefinitely), then you can make it work. If you are both people of strong character and love each other, then it can work too. Sure, we had some pretty terrible phone calls in which I was completely frustrated with the whole situation and crying, etc -- but he loved me through them. And we made it.

If a long distance engagement doesn't work, you can be sure that neither would the marriage, should you have to be separated for any length of time.

There is no guarantee any kind of engagement will work. If you truly love one another, stay in constant communication and see each other as often as possible it can work. Don't let it drag on for years though...that is inviting failure.

There is NO certainty in any type of relationship - long distance or not. You and your partner need to make the decision to try and try hard to see if it's worth it, again irregardless of locations.

Not to burst your bubble, but usually they don't work out. As you know, it's very hard. It also, depends on how long you plan on living so far away from eachother. I don't know about you, but if i'm in a very serious relationship, i want to be able to hug my Man as often as posssible.
