Hi...The Bible was written by man inspired by God so actually the author of the Bible is God. Now in my research regarding this topic, the Roman Catholic scholars and 'others alike had decided what Books and Scriptures were to be placed in the Bible. Now how they decided what to delete from the Book I don't know. In my opinion, anything that dealt with God and His word or the writings from the disciples should have been all placed in the Bible not only a selected few. The Dead Sea Scrolls had the entire writings of the Old Testament except for Esther. Now also there have been Scriptures and writings from Judas and Mary Magdalene that were deleted from the Holy Book...hmmm? I wonder why? And many others, so who inspired these scholars on what to add or delete from the Holy Book. What were in these other writings that the Roman Catholic scholars didn't want us to know as Christians? Just a thought. It states in the Bible that all that was written was inspired by God even though man wrote the contents. One must understand the concept that all these writings were written on papyrus paper or other material alike since no printing press had been invented as yet. All the writings that had been discovered through the ages have basically stated the same thing when it came to God and His word and His son Jesus Christ so evidently it must be true what was written.Have a blessed day!

read JOB 32:8 it says but there is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty give them understanding.
read 2nd TIMOTHY3:1-17.hear some vs.16 all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.17 that the man of God may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto all good works. so now we know where the writing in the bible come from no one but God himself and if we follow them we cannot fall into the hands of the devil and not have the protection from God and now we also know that when we do wrong it is a choice that we have made and not God so don't blame him when things go wrong.

If they agree with the Bible. Some of the "gospels" that were not included failed that test.
It seems like given enough time people are allowed to discredit anything that disagrees with what they want to be true. If they don't want to believe in God, "the Bible is full of fairy tales." If they want to hate Jews with no guilt, "The holocaust did not happen. For some reason, time makes people able to willingly forget. It doesn't matter that the Bible is a compilation of incredible stories that occurred at locations we know are real, written over a period of about 1500 years. For some reason, if it is not on film, it is worthless. Since God SEEMS to not do the same things now the Bible says He did then, He must not exist. There are many reasons for believing God's word is true that I did not mention, but that is not really the question you asked.

The Beroeans in Acts 17:11 had the right idea. Paul and Silas were there telling them things and they "with great eagerness of mind, searched the scriptures daily to see if these things were so." They did not accept at face value anything, but searched the known scriptures to see for themselves.

Historically, it was determined by the political process.
Check out the apocrypha (the other gosples that was decided to be left out of the bible).
Check out the references below to see how Jesus obtained godhood in the First Council of Nicea.
These examples will give you a better understanding of how it was decided what to include and exclude from the current bible.

The ones that dont contradict what anything else in His word says. The ones that were written by the followers of God, who dedicated and maybe even sacrificed their lives to share the amazing love that Christ has to offer.

Read the Bible for yourself. You'll find there are absolutely no contradictions of doctrine within it's pages. Those who claim there are, haven't read or studied it.
God inspired and protected His Word for all generations until His return.

Jesus told us which to believe and what not to believe.
When Jesus says something that is contradictory to a previous statement, research this statement, and you will find that it is a statement from a prophecy concerning Him. All prophecies concerning Jesus had to be fulfilled.
Jesus gave us the TRUE Word of God, if you would quit trying to prove to yourself that the God of Moses and the God of Jesus are one in the same, you would understand all the Words the Jesus spoke.
Jesus told you the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, He intentionally did not include Moses in this statement.
Moses gave you not that bread from heaven
