I have had an EXTREMELY sore throat since Monday (August 20th) and have been to the doctor's 3 times now. Everytime I swallow it feels like glass is tearing the back of my throat, the corners of my lips are sore and cracked, I have several ulcers (both on my lips and on my tongue), I have white spots on the roof of my mouth and a few right near my tonsils, my throat and tonsils are VERY red and inflamed and a few zits around my mouth. I have been told by the hospital and my GP that I do not have tonsilltis, but a severe pharyngitis. Is there anyone who can recommend anything to relieve the pain? I am currently drinking bucket loads of water, taking ibuprofen, sucking throat drops and eating milk pops, but would appreciate any other ideas... as it's like sharp glass everytime I swallow! :-(

Tablespoon lemon juice, Tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon hot water. Mix together and drink while warm. Works a treat! Good luck

I am on pretty safe grounds, as you have seen your GP 3 times, to agree that from your excellent description, it does sound like a viral sore throat, rather than a bacterial one, the odds were 85% on the statistics alone anyway. ( However no one can be 100% certain without both a swab and a blood test for confirmation.)

You also sound as if you have some secondary apthous mouth ulcers, due to your run down state. Bad news, these are also viral and have no specific treatment either.

Salt and aspirin gargles should be avoided as salt is dangerous and aspirin irritant. A grove of oranges, 2 hives of honey and 3 Holland and Barrett shops full of vitamins will not help either.

Your high fluid intake and ibuprofen are quite appropriate, all I can suggest is that you add in either Diflam or Chloraseptic spay to reduce the soreness and inflammation. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Orajel, the jelly they put on babies' gums when they're teething has a local anesthetic. You can try that.

Chloroseptic is a spray with a local anesthetic.

Perhaps the most effective would be the OTC med they use to help sufferers of canker sores. It has a local anesthetic as well.

Are you taking an antibiotic? If not, call the dr. and DEMAND one. How much ibuprofen are you taking? You can take 800 mg if you weigh over 100 lbs. Additionally, between the doses of ibuprofen, take 2 extra strength tylenol. So it goes IB (3 hours) Tyl (3 hours) IB (3 hours) Tyl (3 hours). Take one med, wait 3 hours, take the other.

I had strep a while back, and while it wasn't on my tongue, it started at my tonsils, behind my tonsils all the way to the back of my throat AND down my esophagus to my sternum. That was SOOOOO miserable.

Get that antibiotic, and if it's not working within 48 hours, DEMAND a different one. If you can, Levaquin is the strongest antibiotic we have in the US.

Feel better, sweetie.

Have read the other answers already given and agree with all of them but what none of them have said is why the things they recommended work. Garging with aspirin, cider, honey and lemon, salt water is all a way of coating the affected area with an antiseptic (be it manufactured or natural) which is what will help to reduce the infection. Ibuprofen will be helpful as it is an anti inflammatory which should help to reduce the selling of the area. Personally I have used the cider vinegar method but think you should ensure that it is organic and do not have anything to drink for half an hour afterwards so that you do not wash it away. Hope you feel better soon.

I have this problem all of the time - it sucks! Drink as much tea as you can possibly stand, adding honey works too, use a lot of throat lozenges, eat a lot of soup, frozen foods like popsicles are always good too. Definately go to the drug store and get a nasal/sinus decongestant. Usually if I can get my sinuses and my nose clear so everything stops running down the back of my throat, the soreness starts to go away quickly. If none of this seems to be helping you see your doctor for a strep culture. Feel better! :-)

Another vote for chloraseptic, or own brand spray containing benzocaine, teething gel helps the mouth ulcers, gargle with soluble aspirin, 1 tablet in a small amount of water, but read the ibuprofen data sheet first as the two together might not be advisable.

You could try gargling with either salt water ,soluble aspirin and believe it or not vinegar, I am not sure if you have to add water with the vinegar or not.. Failing that go to the chemist you might be able to get an anaesthetic throat spray

Gargle with apple cider vinegar. My sister gets sore throats a lot and this takes it away for her.

Zinc and Vitamin C lozenges. It will shorten the duration of your sore throat. If you take Vitamin C and zinc supplement pills everyday, like I do and I hardly ever get sick, you won't get sick as quick and if you do you will get better quicker. I'm a firm believer in the power of Zinc and Vitamin C as a remedy for the common cold.
