Racing in the truck series should give JV a chance to get some experience before he makes the jump to the Sprint Cup next season. Can the Bill Davis team be competitive?

He might. He's got front running truck teams and the 22 team has been improving steadily in Cup. Toyota's going to be even stronger next year, so we'll see.

I think it's a tall order. Jacques will have to qualify for the Cup races on speed - like Jeremy Mayfield did this year - to earn a spot in the top 35 in owners points. Jeremy did not qualify for over half the races this year, and he's a veteran who's won races and qualified for the Chase twice.

Jacques has an impressive resume, and if Davis lands a bigtime sponsor, they have a shot...but I think it's a long one. Maybe when Joe Gibbs Racing switches to Toyota next year, Davis can form a partnership with them for engineering and engine support. And maybe Toyota's overall performance will improve with a season under their belt.

Bill Davis Racing hasn't provided competitive cars in a long time. The time that I can recall was when Jeff Gorden drove his Busch car and that was a long time a go
