How far in reality would you go to teach school age children the horrors of war.Or must we sanitise it in the name of the PC brigade(Don,t traumatise children) to do that do we devalue the sacrifices made.I ask this because soon I will be involved in a war museum and we will be doing re enactments including the civillian parts of the war(Bomb shelter with sight, sound and smells).

I'm not sure what "teaching children the horrors of war" would accomplish.
Is your quest to make them feel scared of living in a war torn world?
Do you want to scare them so badly that they will grow up and become world leaders bent on eliminating war because of the encounter they had as children?
Are you sure introducing images of war to their developing eyes and brains will have a positive impact on their reasoning and not lead to antisocial behaviour later in life?
I'm not totally sure that the results of your experiment are truly known, nor the long term effect analysed. You wouldn't have to throw a child into a tank of foaming water to demonstrate the feeling of a sinking ship, you only need trigger their imaginations.
It isn't sanitation, it is perspective. These children aren't fearing for their lives, so no matter how much you scare them, you won't instill the sense of hopelessness one felt in a real bomb shelter in WWII. You'll just scare them so they won't want anything to do with the museum any longer.
g-day!

where will this be sited................I ask as to be honest the reply would be based on what part of the world you was aiming this at.
I went as an 11yr old to Dachau etc etc and whilst was NOT old enough to view the film they had there can recall many of what I saw and will always remember it....not in a bad way but as a way of remembering those that was lost in the camps, to see a room, a HUGE room filled with baby booties and tiny shoes from floor to ceiling as a days "take" to the gas chambers will always stay with me and with good luck will give me the courage to make sure that NEVER happens again.
As for the bomb shelter thing, IF you are in the UK area I strongly suggest a working visit to a place called Flambards down in Cornwall that has done an excellent job of the reconstruction, from the cobbles and the mist / fog to the rooms and shops as they would have been during the time period............
regards
then I would really encourage you to do a fact finding trip down to flambards, if nothing else you could view it and see the really good, the ok and the very few "silly" bits and really work on it from there.

It would be hard to tell children about he horrors of the war, but it is something that they are going to have to learn about. It should be sanitised according to the ages, but as they get older, they should be told about everything.
A good place to start would be the displacement of children from the cities to the counrty during WW2. It is something that they would be able to understand.

At the age of 18 I would say that the typical American teenager is quite familiar with violence.

On the contrary, read the KGB study on American children.
Video Games, Movies and Television have desensitized our children to death and killing to a point that they are quite ready to commit autrocities to "Win". Showing them more autrocities would just be giving them more ideas.
