Okay my cat weighs 20 pounds! He is huge! Anyhow he is 8 years old, and my concern is how do I get him to loose the weight, I have 2 cats, one is a kitten and fit. But my male cat is obese. He has also had urninary problems and my vet told be to only feed him friskies special diet (as he would not eat the vets foods). And that is all I have been doing for the past 4 years. But now within 8 months he has gained 8 pounds. The kitten is not to blame we have only had him 2 weeks. I got him for my son, but also hoping it would get our cat off his fat rump! HELP!!!!!!!!

There's an easy solution. You can feed BOTH cats the same food - but it has to be a good quality canned food.

The canned food will help the male with both his weight problem and his urinary issues. This is because the food is species appropriate and won't contain unnecessary carbs (which dry food does). And because it's 78% moisture on average, it will help dilute the urine and keep him properly hydrated.

As for the kitten, it too will thrive on the canned food. Kittens need more calories and slightly higher amounts of the same nutrients adults require. It will get this with a good food.

"Kitten" food is little more than marketing. And special urinary diets may very well contain things that are helpful with urinary issues, but if they're dry foods, they're not good.

Stop free feeding him, give your fat cat only about a 1/4 cup a day. He won't gain weight if he can't eat too much. Also make sure he's not getting at the kitten's food.

I had the same situation. . My cats eat Purina One Hairball Remedy. The vet told me to give them only 1/4 cup of food per feeding. I did this twice a day and it worked.
Has your cat been tested for Thyroid disease? He sure is gaining a lot of weight fast. Make sure they have plenty of water because when they see the food is gone they will drink to fill their stomachs

My cat weighs 14 and half pounds and has to lose 3 pounds....the vet says to have the cat lose the weight SLOWLY. My ve said he wants kitty to lose 3 pounds over 5 months. If cats lose weight too fast they can develop liver problems. (according to the vet). I am trying so hard to cut back on the food and I am not seeing a loss yet. If you get any advice, please let me know. I am cutting back on kitty treats as well.

Feed a better quality food than that. All the chemicals in that nasty food are doing quite a number to your cat's internal organs. Try the raw diet, or a high quality food like felidae.
