Making your own cat food can be tricky because you will need to research proper feline nutrition and purchase supplements to add to your mixture.

It is best to buy a good quality "light" cat food meant for slimming down overweight cats. It may take a few tries to find one your cats like, but it will be worth it in the end.

When you find the right food, only put down an appropriate sized portion for your cats. Don't just fill the bowl and let them graze all day. Whatever they have not consumed in a 20-30 minute period should be picked up and tossed. If food is not available all the time, they will not be able to eat constantly and will lose weight. It would also be a good idea to increase their activity level if you can. Find some cool toys and play with them so they are a bit more active than they have been.

You're right - don't bother with diet foods. They're typically even less healthy than regular foods!

All you need to do is feed a good quality canned food. Your cat can probably eat up to 6oz per day (1 can) and will lose weight at a safe pace.

Try the raw diet or a high quality food like felidae. Cats are carnivores and should not be fed fruits and veggies as a supplement to meaty foods. Your cat won't be getting enough essential proteins to live off of.
