Because religious people do not comprehend the idea that there can be meaning in this world unless there is a God and an afterlife. It is really kind of sad.

If their God's existence can have meaning without a higher power, then why can't man?

They seem to equate atheism with a lack of fear of dying, as though by killing yourself, you'd prove something. They seem to neglect the little step of having a LIFE in there somewhere. I'm not an atheist, but I can see the point of view of those that are; while I don't agree with them, they are certainly entitled to that point of view, and are certainly people who deserve life every bit as much as those who subscribe to a particular belief. The "why don't you kill yourself" comeback is childish, at best.

well, maybe ONE religious folk said that. I'll go slap her for you. Where is she? Or how about a nasty email. Something along the lines of: "Well, hey, SAME to YOU!!"

Will that help?
Or maybe a link to a psychological self-assessment site.

Theists want to know how an atheist accounts for his moral worldview. Why is it murder for one human being to kill another human being, but it’s not murder for a dog to kill another dog? Why is it wrong for one group of randomly formed atoms to extinguish the “life force” of another group of randomly formed atoms?

I have never heard THAT conversation.

I have heard "I am atheist " (or some variation) followed by the following

"Then where do your morals come from"?
"Then where do YOU come from" ?
" Then who created the Universe"?

"You're going to hell".

But I have never heard "why don't you kill yourself" as a repsonse.

Because they litterally can't find a reason to exist without their god. Its very sad. They must lead terrible lives that they can't find any worth in their life without their god.

I've never said that to an atheist. That would just send the person to eternal hell even faster. I always tell them to believe that Jesus, who is God, died for their sins and rose again, so they won't have to go to eternal hell.

No, they mostly just say "you're going you hell, you know that, right?"

I reply with "there is no hell, but if there is at least all the fun people are going where I'm going".
