My cat is experincing rapid weight loss and refuses to eat. My mother thinks it may be FeLV. Can any of you think of anything else it might be? She hasn't eaten for days. I know that you aren't vets and that even if you are you can't give me an actual diganois, but I just wanted some options.

Rapid weight loss and refusal to eat are very serious symptioms but only a vet can tell you what is wrong.

It could be FeLV, but it could also be diabetes, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, a foreign body in her mouth or throat, poisoning, and a dozen other things.

If she hasn't eaten in days, you should have taken her to the vet days ago. If you don't do so soon, the cat will certainly die.

Rapid weight loss could be a thyroid out of control, diabetes or renal failure. The vet needs to rule out all three of these for sure.

He should also check the throat in case of a growth or mouth ulcer which would make it too painful for the at to eat. Or broken teeth, FIP and a couple other things. I woulnd't jump on the FeLV bandwagon right away, there's too many other things this could be.

very hard to say why but sudden weight loss in any cat is a sign the cat is very sick and needs medical attention. It doesn't mean it has FelV unless hes been diagnosed with that already :(
It could be kidney failure, thyroid, diabetes, poisoning or any number of things. Some can be cured easily by medicine and treatment some not. So definitely bring her as soon as possible to the Vet so you know what it is she has.

Good luck!

First of all, please do take her to the vet IMMEADIATELY>

Rapid weight loss and refusing to eat are red flags to take your cat to the vet.

It really depends, and I'm no vet. It's possible it coulde be FeLV, but it could have been old age or parasites from the outdoors if she goes outside.

Best of luck.

Hope this helps you in this situation.

Always,

Oh sweetie. I hope it's nothing serious. I don't think that she has felv or fiv as the symptoms are that she would be listless (very heavy and floppy and/ or restless) and have a fever. But you must take her to a vet to get expert advice x

Same thing happened to my son's cat. She had gotten into some antifreeze in the garage. It's poison, but it tastes great to cats and dogs. There was nothing the vet could do about it. Antifreeze causes the kidneys and liver to shut down. I hope your cat didn't get into any antifreeze.

That happened to one of my friends cats when she swallowed a pin that got stuck in her throat. She stopped eating and lost alot of weight

But it can be anything. Poison, disease...
So ofcourse, you should call the vet.

hope your kitty is okay :)
