Is that really their "spirit" in pain, why does it really ache in the area of the heart, anatomically speaking? Does your spirit reside in your heart do you think? By that I mean your "human" spirit, life force, etc, you get the idea. (I do not practice any religion.)

Thank you to the people who answered me seriously on this. It takes a lot for me to let my guard down to ask something like this.
Twinsma: I am extremely intrigued by your answer, thank you.

When that happens to me, it is usually in my abdominal area, and I get a cold sweat. But, I feel like this so much that I don't really notice it, when I am not in "spiritual" pain, and I can breathe, I think, "what was that all about"?

Your theory is no more unlikely than any other.
Some people might suggest that the physical sensations (the pain, ache in your heart/chest) are a result of mere biology...that the pain is psychological/mental and that the brain sends signals to the heart that trigger the physiological response. However, these people won't be able to cite a single scientific source that supports this theory.
Personally, I think your theory makes the most sense. I have heard stories about heart transplant patients that awake from surgery with "feelings" that suggest some connection with the donor...some even instinctively "recognize" members of the donor's family. If everything we feel (everything we "are") comes from our brain, then where is this information coming from...what are they experiencing? I know this isn't always (or even usually) the case, but something is happening that can't be explained by medical science.
I do believe that we have a "spirit" and that spirit can experience pain, fear, uncertainty. I wouldn't go so far as to say it resides in your heart, but that would certainly be one good location for it.

If you believe in the energy of the body and the chakras, we know in the region of the heart is the heart chakra, the energy center that deals with love, empathy, etc. When we are sad or worried about someone, that energy becomes unbalanced. Because the energy is connected to all of our physical body systems, we often will experience pain in that area, "heartache". I think our energy is part of our spirit or soul. It is what makes up the eternal part of us. Sometimes we can hurt or have empathy for someone and not know why. I think the reason for this is because all of our energy is connected in a universal web.

I believe the soul is in our minds, in our consciousness. The pain we feel in our heart is simply a learned behavior, a mental conditioning if you will. If your whole life, people told you your arm will hurt when you are sad, your mind would be conditioned to feel this way and the brain would send messages to your arm to feel numb or feel pain whenever you experienced sadness. God Bless You...Peace.

The brain is integrated in to the body, of course. It releases hormones in response to stimuli. The heart responds to these hormones in different ways. We recognize "heartache" as the symptoms of the brain's release of certain hormones.
That's it. It's merely biology.

I think the fact that it hurts in that general area is the reason it's caused a heartache. I think it always has something to do with you're breathing and adrenaline.
