Believe in yourself. I know that sounds like a Disney Channel thing, but it's real. 2 miles in 12 minutes is almost impossible to do. You cant be thinking during the entire thing "I cant do this". Keep yourself thinking thoughts of good things like "I wonder what position I'll play". Remember that once you get it over with, your done. And your on the team. And colleges will LOVE you. Thats the most important thing you can do.

As for the actual physical tryout part, whatever you do DO NOT bolt the first mile and go easy on the second. Change it around. I'll tell you why: First of all your going to be extremely tired if you bolt the first and may not have the energy to carry out the second, especially if you get to the last lap and have like 30 seconds. What you need to do is keep a steady, fast beat throughout the entire thing. Dont go fast, and then slow, and then fast again. And whatever you do, DONT walk any part of it (it'll show the coach that you're weak, and they wont like that, plus it'll be hard to start running again.)

Make sure you eat a large breakfast the morning of the tryouts, even if they are in the afternoon. Pack your lunch (dont buy- school lunches have no protein for energy) full of carbs (load up on the bread) and fruit. (I'd recomend Sunny-D for a drink or Gatorade)

Right before you run drink Water or Gatorade (dont forget to have an extra one for when your finished- you'll want it) If your hungry again eat a piece of fruit. Dont eat candy of any sort even if you think it'll make you hyper and run faster. Trust me- It'll only make you barf.

As for the practicing today- go outside and run maybe 3/4 of a mile in a slow jog. Come back, and stretch constantly throughout the entire day. Stretch every part of your body, I'd work extra hard on those sit and reaches (you can skip the push-up's) You can do it anywhere- watch tv while you do it. Doesnt matter. Drink plenty of fluids today so your body will have the extra energy. Dont stretch/run enough that you'll get sore. If your sore, that is very very bad. Dont strain yourself or anything either, you want your muscles to be in tip-top shape. Get a good night's sleep and your ready to go.

Dont be worried about it either. That wont help.

I wish you the best!

Ok.. What I would do is take it easy today...Make sure to stretch before you run. Then take it easy the first mile, not too easy you should be able to do 1 mile in about 6-7 mins easily. Then step it up a couple notches for the next 1/2 mile, you should be able to do that in about 2-3 mins. So we are up to 1.5 miles and 8-10 mins. So on the last 1/2 mile run as hard as you can. When you are done running make sure not to crouch down. Keep your hands on the back of your head and walk around slowly. Get some water if you have to but don't crouch down. It will hurt more. When I run I find it easier to run if I listen to a MP3 player or something to get my mind off of it.

Don't worry you'll be fine.

Hope this helps.

Do not "bolt" the first mile. You want to run as evenly as possible for the whole distance. It's too late now but it would have been a good thing to have run some workouts practicing the correct pace so that you would know how it feels to run 6:00 per mile.

In lieu of that rest and make sure you warm-up and stretch before you are timed. Don't eat the last couple of hours before you run, a full stomach interferes with your breathing.

Relax today. The day before a meet or tryouts should not be a workout day. Try to do your first mile in a modest 6 minutes. Bolting early will sap your stamina. The time to push hard is in the last quarter of a mile, with the finish in sight.

I've had some experience with track and trying to drastically increase my endurance in a short amount of time. At this point, though, you're better off taking it easy - run a couple of miles at a comfortable pace. You don't want to tire yourself out. Good luck at tryouts; I'm sure all your hard work will pay off, and you'll get so much better once the season begins.

Here's a tip: run the first mile in six minutes, then run the second mile in six minutes.
