Literally, it means "Good day, I call myself ... " That's the English equivalent of "Hello, my name is ... " Bon translated from French is good, and jour is day. Je is 'I', appelle comes from appeller, which means 'to call'. When you put Je and appeller together, you have to conjugate it, because you can't say 'I to call'. Just like in English, you say 'I call'. the m' is really 'me', which means 'myself'. But when you put a word like 'me', which ends in a vowel, before a word like 'appelle', which begins in a vowel, it turns into a contraction, so that the sentence could be spoken smoothly.
If your friend is French, or speaks French often, it's a great idea to get acquainted with some French phrases. It's easy to get lost even when you know French, so I can imagine what must've been going through your mind when you heard 'je m'appelle'.
