I am thinking about staying in a suburb and taking the train in to Manhattan with the commuters in the mornings. However, I don't know which suburb is safe and would have hotels available. Thanks for any info you can give.

Jersey City, at the Pavonia-Newport stop on the PATH train. Hotel prices are about half what you'd pay for the same room in Midtown, and the train ride into Manhattan is less than 15 minutes.

Yeah try Rockville Centre NY which is located on the Babylon branch of the LIRR and the trip takes about 40 minutes to Penn Station.
There's an expensive Hampton Inn within walking distance of the train station
There's also a place called the Diplomat Motor Inn which is really popular with the locals [in a positive way] which is not within walking distance of the train station but is much cheaper[like $ 60 .00 per night ] and whatever you would spend in cab fare getting there [ $5.00] would easily be offset by the huge difference in price
There is also a public bus option that is a less than a half mile walk from the Diplomat.

Rockville Center. There's a Holiday Inn right next to the train station. As far as safe, Nassau and Suffolk County police officers earn over a $100,000 with overtime a year. Long Island is probably the safest region in the country. Nevertheless, there is crime on Long Island, that's just a fact of life.

There's a Sheraton International in Mahwah, very beautiful and safe area just at the northen border of NJ; there's a train station in Mahwah to NYC, about 35-40 minutes ride. There's also a Holliday Inn there.

There are a few hotels in Bayside, Queens. You can easily get to the Long Island Railroad, or even the Express Bus, which will take you right into Midtown Manhattan.

I recently went to NYC and stayed in Manhattan and never felt unsafe or in danger. Even walking around at night. I went with y sister.
