My dad's birthday is coming up, and every year we've made our own pickles, but this year he won't have any time so my mom and I want to kind of theme his birthday around pickles. I've been looking but the only thing I've found is a pickle of the month club which is great. Do any of you know of anything else fun that has to do with pickles??

Throw the pickle in the basket toss
Guess how many pickles are in the jar
Pickle decorating contest
Pickle eating contest
Name that pickle contest--put a tray of assorted pickles out and see who can guess the identities of them
Encourage guests to bring recipes for making pickles
Give a jar of pickles to each family as a gift when they leave
Use small cucumbers as place card holders--cut a slot in them
Get a banner made that says "Happy Birthday to a Sweet Pickle"
Have a contest to see how many words can be made from
"Dill Pickle", "Bread and Butter Pickles", etc.

Maybe there's a costume shop that has a pickle costume you
could rent for a short while. Someone dressed as the pickle
can be a 'special guest', with maybe a special gift. And he'd
ring the doorbell and the 'special guest' would be announced
and he'd walk in and give the special gift to the birhthday
boy from him or anonymous gifter. And everyone would have
a good laugh. Or maybe the have telegram delivery in costumes like that you could check out. If he's really into
pickles, that would do it for him. Maybe even getting his
picture taken with Mr Pickle himself? You could also go to
a farmers market, if they are still going at the time of his
birthday, and buy a jar someone else put up. Who knows,
maybe you'll find a good recipe someone has used for
their special batch of pickles, since no two are alike, from
my tasting over the years.

You could make him some Kool-Aid Pickles...they're a little freaky but could be fun! Here's a photo..
http://www.slashfood.com/2007/05/11/kool-aid-dill-pickles/
Here's a recipe...
1 (46-ounce) jar whole dill pickles
1 cup sugar
2 cups water
2 packets red Kool-Aid (such as cherry flavored)
Drain and discard the juice from the pickle jar. Remove the pickles from the jar and cut each one in half lengthwise. Return the pickles to the jar and set aside.
In a large measuring cup, combine the sugar, water and Kool-Aid. Mix until the sugar has completely dissolved. Pour enough of the liquid into the pickle jar to cover the pickles. Discard any excess.
Cover the jar and refrigerate at least 24 hours.
Makes one 46-ounce jar of pickles.

Try fried pickles. You just bread pickle spears with a light batter, like for onion rings, and deep fry.
