I bought a stand-alone DVD recorder that works like a VCR. It records to both DVD-R and DVD+R discs, but I am not sure which type to buy. What is the difference?

The kind of disc you need to buy depends on the brand of equipment you are going to be using the discs in. Mostly, nowadays it doesn't matter much, but it's better to be on the safe side. DVD-r's are DVD Recordables. DVD+R means the same.

pretty much the same thing. The dvd+r has slightly less storage capacity compared to the dvd-r.
