I have used the channel mixer and have also adjusted the channels one by one. In every case my printed picture has a green cast to it. What method do you find to be the most fool proof

That may be a unique case with your software and it's settings. I use both Paint shop Pro and Photo shop and have never had that problem. I also shoot B&W with my Pentax DSLR with no problem. Most (if not all) digital cameras have that option. Most graphic software have a direct B&W conversion in their tool bar menus and should link the gray scale with out any problem. It could also be a printer issue.
You may start by running a test, scan or down load a B&W photo that has good contrast ratio etc., print it and see if you may have a printer problem.
