Many misconceptions in previous answers....
There never was one language that all people in Yugoslavia spoke, because the country was a federal republic, comprised of 6 nations and additional nationalities. Out of these 6, the Serbs, the Croats and the Bosnians spoke the same language, (and still do) at the time called Serbo-Croatian (srpsko-hrvatski). Serbs use both scripts, Latin&Cyrillic. There never was a Bosnian language; it is a modern invention - they renamed the language to suit the newly established country, that's all.
Other than this, there was Slovenian and Macedonian, two other South Slavic languages, equally treated in Yugoslavia. In border areas, of course there were languages of the minorities: Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Italian, German, Albanian. Yugoslavia had a very democratic approach to languages within its territory, it was a model country in which the right to use their native language was promoted and respected by all of its people.
