Generally, when you have a sore throat associated with a cold it is due to the coughing secondary to the post-nasal drainage. The mucous in the throat is the real issue, and the irritation is the secondary issue. First, try an over the counter cold medicine. These are generally effective, though individual selection may vary, they all should suffice. Then increase your intake of clear liquids and vitamin C.

To clear the nose, blow the excess mucous out frequently, if you feel the need, get saline nasal wash solution and cleanse the mucous membranes in the nose.

To sooth the throat, try hot lemonade made with lemon juice and honey. Also gargle with warm water with salt dissolved in it. these two techniques are the most effective home treatments for stripping the mucous off the throat and helping it heal. If the throat soreness gets worse try cepastat gargle available at the pharmacy. much more effective than other over the counter throat pain treatments.

Don't forget that OTC cold meds often have acetaminophen/paracetamol in them so don't take extra.

Mix salt in hot water and saturate it. Take small gulps from the salt water prepared and gargle. Take care not to drink the salt water. Only put it in your mouth and gargle. Spit the water out each time you gargle. Keep doing the same for one or two glasses thrice a day. You can observe the results slowly and gradually.

Rinse your mouth with Listerine; use salt in warm water to gargle, take a sip of water every little bit, eat jello, ice cream, any such thing that is soft and easy to swallow to soothe a sore throat.
Avoid contact with any one!
