By regular inspections. Unfortunately, that is not always possible when a government does not take the health and well-being of it's country to heart. As we have clearly seen with the U.S. and problems with horrid problems stemming from imported goods from China recently.

It is shameful our government holds imports more important than our health.

In the UK food safety is monitored by the Food Standards Agency (see their website www.food.gov.uk). The Agency was set up in 2000 in response to food health issues such as BSE, e.coli and salmonella scares. It is a non-ministerial Agency meaning they don't answer to a Minister but rather they advise them. Food is a devolved issue so there are offices in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each devolved office has a Food Advisory Committee - a body of experts from academia, industry and the like who advise on legislation. In the EU there is EFSA - the European Food Safety Authority. I believe in USA its the FDA who handle this function - the Food and Dug Administration.

I should add that if its a food issue in a restaurant such as poor hygiene, or contamination in a food product requiring withdrawal from outlets then it is the duty of Local Authority Environmental Health Officers to enforce this.

They don't. Why else would we have so much crappy, unhealthy food?
