I would go to see your doctor. They can be lymph nodes. They can swell and they can harden. I don't know the medical lingal, but it has something to do with white blood cells and the accumulate. Reason they swell is to fight infection. Which if you have a cyst, the nodes in that region will swell, sometimes they can be tender.
Whenever there is an abnormal lump it is best to get it checked. Sometimes a biopsy is needed to see if the lump is cancerous.
That would be the more serious of it, for it could be a bacterial growth under the skin like a pimple or a cyst. Definately go and get it checked out just to be on the safe side. I wish I could be of more help.

Usually most swollen glands or lumps under the skin are not cause for concern. The lymph glands on either side of the neck, under the jaw, or behind the ears commonly swell when you have a cold or sore throat.

More serious infections cause glands to become firm, hard, or tender. Examples of these infections include:

Bacterial infection - strep throat, a boil (abscess)

Viral infection - infection of the skin, measles, AIDS, mono

Other infections - Lyme disease, syphilis

Or, non-cancerous benign growths

If you have been sick with a cold or sore throat I wouldn't worry about it. But, if you haven't been sick I would recommend that you get a check up from you doctor to find out what's going on.

Hope this helped - good luck!

Yeah, that sounds like a swollen lymph node. I get 'em a few times a year. It's usually due to the body fighting off an infection or allergies. Try giving him 5 ibuprofen twice a day. It should help with the pain AND the swelling. Also, water will help flush the system, and if it just won't go away, a trip to the doctor for antibiotics may be in order.

Yes you should see a doctor if you have a problem that persists for a long period of time. Maybe they are lymph nodes that are swollen, and lots of things can cause that to happen. With you saying they feel bigger and then smaller, bet they are lymph nodes but cant be sure.

Could be enlarged lymph nodes. They can enlarge with either infection or cancers--infection is the most likely cause. You should see a physician or go to an urgent care facility if you have other symptoms like a cough, fever, sore throat.

If you have no other symptoms, you should see a physician sometime this week.

It sounds to me like you have swollen glands. You might want to see a doctor in case you have some kind of infection.

Good luck!
