from what i can tell, you simply do not understand the game, nor do you care to

poker is a game of skill all the way...look at it this way: all the cards eventually break even, right? if so, then how do people make money? the only logical explanation is that they have made more profitable decisions than their opponents...if there was no skill no one COULD be a pro at the game

so therefore, your question could easily have been answered yourself...you say there's no skill in poker and then ask how people could be a pro...the simple answer should have been that there is, in fact, skill in poker

If you even watch a bit of this game on TV, it becomes pretty obvious that it is a skill game.

Take a look at players such as Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson, and Phil Hellmuth Jr. Each hold ten bracelets from winning World Series of Poker events. In fact this year Hellmuth took the lead by winning an eleventh. How likely does it sound that these three people just got lucky over and over again, while hundreds of other players have tried and failed?

Also if you consider the Main Even of the WSOP, Johnny Chan won it in back to back years against a field of the worlds best professional poker players. In the third year he came second to Hellmuth. Again, just dumb luck?

In any given single hand of poker, luck can certainly play a part. You can sometimes get all your money in with a 99% chance of winning, and the other player catches a miracle combination of cards to win. That's clearly bad luck. But then this happens in any game. Tiger Woods can hit a perfect shot, right as a gust of wind blows his ball off course and into a bunker. Does this make golf a game of luck? Of course not.

Poker is a game of psychological warfare. Professional players will often take down pots with complete garbage hands. They will figure out when another player is weak and exploit this to take their money.

When players are in a hand together, they can calculate pot odds, implied odds, the mathematical chance of winning the hand, or drawing to the best hand. Use of this math can help separate a winning play from a long term losing play.

I suggest you read a book on the subject, or watch it on TV for a while. It will become quite apparent that you don't yet understand the nuance of the game.

Doyle Brunson was recently interviewed on TV. Now keep in mind that he has won millions of dollars over a 50 year career, and has not needed to get a 'real job.' But in this interview he said that even after fifty years of playing the game, he learns something new every session of poker he plays.

If it were just a simple game of luck and random chance, it would certainly not hold the interest of so many people world wide.

Watching the WPT is not going to help you increase your poker skills. The televised events only show the final table of 6 players. It does not show you the skill those players used to out last the other 400-900 players to make it to the final table. By the time the players make it to the final tables, the blinds/antes are so large that you have to start playing many hands you would not even consider playing early on in the tournament. Also, the players become more aggressive and start going after and stealing the blinds The best way to increase your skills is study the game. Pick up the books by Sklansky, Harrington ("Harrington on Hold Em'), and Doyle Brunson. Read these books from cover to cover. A skill you MUST develop is the ability to calculate pot odds. Over the long run playing based on pots will make you a consistent winner.

there is a lot of skill involved but it will only take you so far. Knowing when to fold, how to string people along and exploiting weak players are all things that will make you better, but some things are just unavoidable.. like having pocket kings while the guy sitting right next to you has pocket aces. Or two people flop a set or all the fish that will call ur all in on a draw and always seem to hit.. im bitter but u get my point.

I'd say 90% Skill and 10% Luck. Honestly. It's too hard to explain. But there is SO MUCH to Hold Em' besides luck. You can't be lucky all the time. The top players are always at final table eliminating thousands. The top players always win in the end. Skill overwhelms luck by far.

I think its 70% skill and 30% luck.
Thats why you always see the same names in the world ranked top 100 tournament players.
Thats how some people make a comfortable living playing poker while some loose everything they own.
Its all about working out the mathematical probabilities, knowing when to fold, knowing when to raise knowing when to raise even if the odds are against you because you have studied the playing styles of others...etc..etc...
Texas hold'em- easy to learn but it can take a lifetime to master.

Yes, you have to know at what stage to make a bet and how much. The number of permutations that can beat you and know when to lay your hand down when there's a good chance that the opponent has you beat.
If you check the results of The World series of poker you'll find that predominantly it's the same people at the top. So that shows there's some skill in it.
