There's no cure for depression but it is treated with medication. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medication unfortunately is required for the rest of your life. If you stop after you feel better, the depression will return and you will have a relapse. Don't listen to those who say medicaion is not necessary. It's your second chance at happiness.
You have to have the medication in your system for about 30 days for it to work properly. You can't just pop a pill and expect to feel better. Give it a chance.
I live a completely normal life. I have schizophrenia, major depression and anxiety but my symptoms have been in remission for 4 years now thanks to medication. It took me 5 years to find the right combination for me. I tried exercise, herbs, positive thinking, prayer and nothing worked but medication. Don't give up. Good luck to you.

The pills that are sometimes called : antidepressives, work as such that they fill out the things in your brain that is making you feel depressed. Because you have a substance in your brain that is called Serutonin, and that is what everyone needs to have a good amount of, to feel good, and not feel depressed, so what the pills do is that they make your serutonin become normal, so that you feel better and not as down as before. I hope this will help you understand, and dont hasitate if you are thinking about taking pills for depression, if nothing else works of course. I know people who have taken pills for depression , and they feel a lot better today.

I really don't know, but I do know they work. I'm on Wellbutrin, as I'm bipolar. They have the chemical make-up that affects the brain, obviously, but only a doctor or a pharacist could accurately answer your question. Or do research about them on the internet.

My gp told me they affect the amount of chemical your brain makes and it makes the amount correct which stops you feeling so depressed. It does take a while to work 2 weeks earliest.

It has to do with changing the chemicals in the brain.
Sadly, many people can use healthier things, instead of meds, to help with depression. What are those? Change bad eating habits, get exercise, take natural suppliments (St. John's Wort and Phenocane), seek out counseling for problems in their lives and live well (make good choices).

It alters the brain's output of hormones.
But, then so does being happy or sad.
The medications only mask the symptoms.
It does not solve the problems that led to the depression.
Therapy helps you solve those problems.
