In fishing trolling means trailing a lure to see what will bite at something shiny.

In folk mythology a troll is an ugly creature that lies in wait to engage people in pointless disputes, with the aim of getting their goat.

On the internet, it's both.

A troll is a fearsome member of a mythical anthropomorph race from Norse mythology. Their role ranges from fiendish giants – similar to the ogres of England (also called Trolls at times, see Troller's Gill) – to a devious, more human-like folk of the wilderness, living underground in hills, caves or mounds. In Orkney and Shetland tales, trolls are called trows, adopted from the Norse language when these islands were settled by Vikings.

One of those plastic toys that are still reasonably popular today, or a big hairy thing that lives under a bridge and eats goats, or a thing that is big, hairy and uses magic for the wrong things. It all depends on what books you read.

A troll will ask insightful questions for the sole purpose of getting someone to answer in a defensive or angry way so that they can report. Simply put they are trouble makers. I do my best to just pass over their questions. Some times you will find them in answers slamming the asker's intelligence. For no reason but to be mean. It makes them feel better about themselves. Best to ignore them!

someone very unattractive who is homeless and lives under a bridge and is a bully and a con artist because he tricks u into thinking u cant cross the bridge unless u pay him off.My experience with them has been they r usually quite short and if u just throw a blanket over there head and run fast they cant catch u.But I guess they still win cause they get your damn blanket.

A creature who lives under a bridge and eats people/goats.

An alternate meaning would be to describe an ugly person (like me).

When one calls someone a troll it is because that person(the troll) is bringing about things the others do not want to hear.
