Nothing, really. It's a very vague term and has no diagnostic validity. It could refer to mood disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, personality disorders. Pretty much anything.

It depends on the situations surrounding the emotionally disturbed. But usually, it is when there have been issues in your life that has made it difficult for you to emotionally deal with situations in your life in a way that doesn't bring you harm, or any one else around you.

People can be emotionally healthy and balanced...or they can be emotionally sick and call it emotionally disturbed, in other words unbalanced.

You know a disturbed person when how they act, how they talk, how they interact with others just doesn't add up.....they are unbalanced...and it shows. They are sick, and need professional help.

That term usually means that there is an emotional disturbance within the person. For example; someone experiences great trauma as a child and never gets counseling help to deal with it. Later in life, they begin to act out of this trauma such as; heavy drug or alcohol use, unhealthy sexual practices (multiple partners), withdrawing from society, etc.

This is a rather simple answer to a complex problem.
