The American Cancer Society is highly regarded due to the fact that they are a not for profit organization that is working with scientists, researches, doctors, and the government in the fight against cancer.
They raise a significant amount of dollars each year, and then return those dollars back to the lobbying, research, studies, and information to health care workers as well as helping families.
The ACS has established some very good coping programs to help patients and their family members deal with cancer, its diagnosis and the life altering effect it has on all of us. There is the I Can Cope program. Look Good Feel Better. Smoking cessation. In most states the ACS also has a well established CAT Team that picks a specific topic and then does programs and education in order to have a direct impact on the number of cancer diagnosed for that specific topic.
I also know that there was a program developed in Wisconsin that got some national recognition when a CAT (community action team) was able to bring physicians together from 3 competing health systems under one roof for some learning and education in regards for diagnosis, detecting, and treating colo-rectal cancer.
The ACS is highly regarded due to their contributions in the war against cancer and finding a cure for the dreaded disease.

Most people are at some time touched by cancer, either themselves, a partner, a relative, a workmate, a friend.
The Cancer Societies in various countries raise money for research, provide information to those diagnosed, and educate on preventative measures and early detection programs.
We should all support them, we don't know when we will need their support.

Because everyone knows someone who has suffered or died from it. They are fighting to eliminate something that has killed several family members of mine, so I hold them in high regard.
The work they do today could save my life or my childrens' lives in the future.
